"Back in the late 80s and early 90s, pressure from various animal rights groups including PETA lead many cosmetic companies to stop testing their products on animals.
Amongst them were beauty giants Estee Lauder, Avon and Mary Kay. For more than 20 years, the companies made frequent appearances on cruelty-free lists, but today that is no longer the case.
In what many see as a step backwards, the three companies have resumed testing on animals in order to sell their products in China."
"While those who read this piece may want to boycott these companies, its important to know just how extensive the Estee Lauder brand is. In another addition to its eponymous-named brand, the Estee Lauder group includes Aramis, Clinique, Origins, Le Labo, M.A.C, Bobbi Brown, La Mer and Aveda. It is also the global licensee for fragrances and/or cosmetics sold under brand names, such as Tommy Hilfiger, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Tom Ford and Coach."
A check of the source links show that Lush Cosmetics have opted out of selling in China in order to maintain their cruelty-free standards, and I believe that Urban Decay is also doing this. If anyone has any info on other companies that are still cruelty free, please post.

(6,592 posts)This is jaw-droppingly ironic and horrifying.
China's got a lot if nerve requiring animal testing with the way they allow companies to treat their workers.

(15,321 posts)It's going to cost more money to keep wearing cruelty free makeup, it seems. That's a real shame because it will make it harder to convince more women to make that choice.

(13,661 posts)Though ELF's parent company is not.
Also, Pacifica has nice makeup and is cruelty free and available at Target.
Sonia Kashuk and Pixi and Pacifica are a little bit more $$ at Target, but Milani, ELF, NYX and Wet n' Wild are quite, quite inexpensive. Milani has one of the best foundations on the market, and ELF and Sonia Kashuk have really nice brushes. Pixi is very nice, too, though more mid-range. Physician's Formula also has great mascara.
Here's a very good list:

(6,592 posts)I cannot find to save my life the story about a girl trapped and miserable to support everyone else's lifestyle, but it sure reminds me of that.
Time to brush off my old copy of Bloom Countys 'Night of the Mary Kay commandos' and send them copies.

(64,423 posts)China rips everyone off. Nobody wins there and kowtowing to what they want won't serve you longterm. When the first bit of footage comes out, video from activists, I wish you luck distancing yourself.
Thankfully, there are brands that won't kneel.
