That same election year, my great aunt and uncle from Louisiana came to visit us. They were classic 60s Southern Democrats in every sense of the word. It was so ironic: my parents had made up their minds to vote for LBJ because Goldwater was unhinged. My great aunt and uncle had already voted absentee -- for Goldwater -- because LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act. The four of them simply stared at each other in an uncomfortable silence for about a minute before moving on to small talk.

It was the worst tasting Orange Pop I ever drank.
After that, he would have never got my vote, if I could have voted.

I do remember this commercial.
It had quite an effect on my Grandfather.

He was the foppish, stuffy embassy assistant who wouldn't help Hawkeye and Winchester when they were trying to get an American-Korean baby out of the country to the US.

I wrote a HS newspaper feature story about the Johnson/Goldwater race and that ad was part of the storyline.
