The UNC Board of Governors has moved its meeting this week from UNC Asheville to Chapel Hill because of a student protest that was planned in Asheville....
Over the weekend, we have been in consultation with our colleagues at UNC General Administration about potential large-scale protests from off-campus groups on Thursday and Friday during the Board of Governors meeting, Grants email said. Based on these conversations, a decision has been made to move the Board meeting to General Administration offices in Chapel Hill, which will not result in campus disruption at a critical time in the academic year.
Also Monday, Board Chairman Lou Bissette, who lives in Asheville, emailed the board, writing, it is with a great deal of personal disappointment that I am notifying you that we have decided it is best for us to move the Board meeting back to Chapel Hill, where we are better equipped to handle these events.
After several protesters were arrested late last year, UNC board meetings have included a significant police presence. At its meeting at Fayetteville State University in March, attendees were required to pass through metal detectors.
