... Meek, 21, faces up to eight years in prison if convicted of misprision of a felony and lying to federal authorities.

Roof had been staying at Meek’s Lexington County home in the weeks leading up to the June 17 shooting that killed nine black parishioners. Meek and his family members have said that Roof spoke of carrying out mass violence in Charleston and starting a race war. Meek hid Roof’s .45-caliber Glock pistol, then gave it back once Roof sobered up, they said.

But the FBI said he knew more specifics of Roof’s scheme and failed to alert police. And after the nine were slain, he lied to FBI agents about what he knew, the indictments stated.

His trial in U.S. District Court in downtown Charleston could last until July 8, a scheduling notice filed late Tuesday by Judge Richard Gergel stated. That’s three days before Roof’s death penalty trial on murder, attempted murder and firearms charges is scheduled to start in state court ...
