This first happened three years ago, when he sang it opening a ball game in San Antonio, TX (his birthplace). Oh, he was wearing a mariachi costume because, well, he sings mariachi, is a mariachi performer. Back then, there was the original outburst of racist outraged remarks. Surely now, three years later things would be much more enlightened. Oh. Never mind.
By the bye, his dad is also a U.S. Citizen and a Navy veteran (not a chickenhawk, as probably all of the racist commenters are). His mother is also a U.S. Citizen of Filipino heritage.

Twitter racists freak out after Mexican-American teen sings national anthem at #DemDebate
The return of 15-year-old Sebastien de la Cruz aka El Charro de Oro to national television on Wednesday brought with it another round of criticism from Twitter users apparently stunned to discover the existence of Mexican-Americans.
De la Cruz sang the national anthem prior to the debate between Democratic Party presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). Some of the worst reactions can be seen below:
Why is this random Mexican singing the National Anthem really bad.
@hillbillyfairy @realDonaldTrump Could I go to a Presidential debate in Mexico dressed as Uncle Sam and sing the Mexican National Anthem?
CNN this is the dumbest thing I've quite possibly ever saw. For a minute I forgot I was in #America until they sang the national anthem.
Wouldn't it be fitting for the democratic debate if the national anthem of mexico had been sung instead of the national anthem of the US?
Wrong Univision to let a boy sing our national anthem with a charro outfit. I'm democratic and Hispano but that wasn't right
@BerniePride its our #nationalanthem and should be treated with respect how would you like it if i sing #lacucaracha in my unclesam suite
The Dem Debate hosted by Mexico, the National Anthem sung by little @marcorubio Hillary promises she won't lie Bernie offers free churros
Gawd - the guy who sung the national anthem looked like the Frito Bandito!!
CNN has topped a new low
mariachi singing the national anthem
for a US presidential debate

(5,325 posts)I didn't see it so I'm a little in the dark here. I'm assuming that he sang the anthem in English, so what is it that people are objecting to? I mean, it was on Univision, was it not? So were people expecting everyone involved to be Swedish?

Actually, earlier yesterday he was interviewed on Univision in Spanish and his Spanish is shaky. Selena GOMEZ barely speaks any Spanish at all and J.Lo (and Marc Anthony) are also in the shaky category. The original namesake Selena (the subject of the movie, the one shot dead) also was shaky in Spanish.
Two hilarious movie scenes:
from (Born in East L.A.?) : Cheech riffs, "Mexican Americans!1 We've come a long way!1 We go to college now. We major in SPANISH. ----------------- And get B(s)!1"
from Selena: Selena's father is dishing advice to the band member young dudes: "We (Mexican-Americans) have it rough!1 The Mexicans in Mexico hate us over there, the (gringos?) hate us over here!1 We have to know who Vicente FERNANDEZ is over there and who Frank SINATRA is over here!1 And who (Cuban talkshow host) Cristina is and who Oprah is!1"

(70,793 posts)I grew up hearing my parents talk about one of the past suppression tactics, the Poll Tax, so while wingnuts are always saying it's not about suppressing voting by minorities but only to curtail voter fraud, the connection between Voter ID with Poll Tax/suppression was immediately clear to me.
And they run "public service" ads saying how *convenient* it is to use a driver's license or the like. It ain't about convenience. So every time I vote I make a point of producing my full blown passport. I haven't seen anybody else use it, and the poll workers act like they've never seen one before and pore over it while they're vetting me. Oh, and the PENETRATING STARES shifting from the passport picture to my face. Actually, I'm in a suit and tie in the picture and look like a diplomat, while I'm usually in shorts and flip flops when I vote, so their brain synapses are crackling.
So the first time I used it, there was a FIERCE poll watcher standing behind the seated worker, sort of like how William REHNQUIST and Sandra Day O'CONNOR began their careers by harassing voters at polls. And I said to the worker, "I'm using my passport because I feel I'm in a foreign country!1"
The worker almost laughed but then choked and said under her breath, "Now, now. Don't get us in trouble!1"
