You may be forgiven for believing that Republicans learned a valuable lesson about the changing face of America in 2008 when a smooth-taking black man with a Muslim name was handed the keys to the Very Very White House Where Ronald Reagan Used To Live.
That year the GOP felt compelled to pair a cranky-pants war hero with the fluttering under-thrown Hail Mary pass that was Sarah Palin a ticket which promptly plummeted to the ground like a duck in the midst of a mid-flight aneurysm.
Despite being weak on domestic policy, foreign affairs, the Constitution, history, science, geography, intellectual curiosity and syntax, Palin gave McCain the jolt he needed: a straight-talkin right-wingin bitter-clingin word-slingin lamestream media-zingin embodiment of good old-fashioned American know-nothingism.
Mission accomplished. Also, too, mission failure. (Hint: They lost. It was in all of the papers.)

(36,464 posts)where the angry white men were pushing & shoving a black woman, it was like the Palin rallies on steroids. Seriously, I think if there hadn't been cameras, those men might have beaten her. And even worse, I'm not sure Trump would call for his security to intervene.
I didn't catch what she said to set them off, but Trump was just starting to go off on Hillary when suddenly he turned his attention on her & said, "Get out, get out!" Then the pushing & shoving started. At one point it almost looked as if she was smiling - you know, like "Everyone is seeing you assholes for what you are." But holy shit, I would have been scared.
They interviewed her later. She said what you didn't hear was the name calling - that the men called her every filthy name in the book. She ended by saying his supporters "are disgusting & dangerous." Truth.
The second thing that caught my attention last night was interviews with young people who are supporting non-status quo candidates. On the dem side, the young people were articulate & expressed specific reasons why they supported Sanders - income inequality, climate change, racial justice. On the repub side it was just "He's gonna make America great again." Oh, there was one guy who said, "I want a wall!"
This may be one of the most interesting elections of our time, although 2000 will certainly be hard to beat, with the SCOTUS taking the decision away from The People.
