Senate Republicans on Tuesday launched an unprecedented blockade of President Barack Obama's yet-to-be-named Supreme Court pick, saying they won't give any nominee a hearing or even meet with the candidate.
"I don't know how many times we need to say this," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told reporters. "The Judiciary Committee has unanimously recommended to me that we not hold a hearing. I don't know the purpose of such a visit. I would not be inclined to take one myself."
Supreme Court nominees typically make courtesy calls to senators, so that lawmakers can get to know them on a more personal level and question them in a more intimate setting.
But on Tuesday, at least five senior Republican senators -- McConnell, John Barrasso (Wyo.), John Cornyn (Texas), Orrin Hatch (Utah) and Lindsey Graham (S.C.) -- said they won't participate in this tradition for an Obama nominee.
"There'd be no reason to," Barrasso told HuffPost, when asked if he'd meet with whatever nominee Obama sends to the Hill.
"I don't see the purpose," Cornyn said.

(5,191 posts)Deliberately defying the Constitution for poltical gain qualifies a treason in my book.

(2,840 posts)And what counts as treason in your book, along with $3, will buy you a cup of coffee.
Look it up. Treason has a specific constitutional definition. What it counts as in your, my, or anyone else's "book" matters not one whit.

(5,191 posts)Exactly, were does it say the Senate has the ability to not even go through the confirmation process of a presidential nominee?

(2,840 posts)But keep up your outrage, if it helps you get people to the polls in November. Because THAT'S what and when it really matters!
It's called POLITICS.

(2,840 posts)(And your questions dance very close to the DU TOS line, I should add. Take it from someone who's been posting here (on and off) since 2004.)

(5,191 posts)It's not worth my energy to try and explain it! You're the one who started with the smug, arrogant tone. My opinion is not worth a 3 dollar cup of coffee? Dude: DU IS AN OPINION FORUM!

(2,840 posts)But when your opinion rests on an incorrect interpretation of the law, don't be surprised when someone tries to correct that.
Now, opine away. (And it's madam, dear sir, not "dude." Thank you.)

(9,951 posts)You throw around the word treason without knowing what it actually means.

(7,820 posts)Cause maybe they might consider the nominee then. It doesn't matter who he nominates- they will not confirm- or even consider- anyone Obama nominates. He should pick a incredibly well qualified candidate and hit Repugs over the head with their obstructionism. And then we need to elect a Democratic President and Senate in November who can fill this vacancy. But I'm not sure any pressure can be brought to bear to make Republicans do the right thing here.

(2,840 posts)He can nominate. That part is his job. The Senate isn't "stopping" the president from doing that.
