A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new — North as well as South.
The danger lies in the issue of slavery once again. The Masters want to own the country and it's 98%.(98% = We The People) They don't want the worker bees to get a drop of the honey. A colony like that will soon die out. A country like that will also die out. The Republican mega-donors/chamber of commerce wants to stop the working American from having a voice in what goes on in the workplace. They don't want the retired worker or the disabled worker to be provided for, as they were promised all their lives they would be. Even the Veterans come home from war and must fight the government for the things he or she was promised. In America a veteran's war with something or someone never ends until they fold up his or her flag.
Thousands of Americans died or were wounded, or had their bodies and minds weakened and their long lives shortened from the harsh life as a soldier or sailor, during the American Civil War. Those Americans sacrificed so that all, Americans would be "Free" and so that the country would NOT be divided. The republican party has gone a long way backward since 1860. Abe wasn't just honest but he was very wise too. I think Abe would vomit at the sight of Karl Rove or the brothers Koch or Tom Donahue or Rupert Murdoch.
The American worker shouldn't be treated like a slave anymore. His children need to go to school instead of to a sweatshop or a coal mine like Newt and his sponsors envision. He or she should have a right to work in a safe work-place and earn a living wage for his family. Americans shouldn't be poisoned by their water and air, so that a few people can become wealthy enough to buy our government.
