(3,557 posts)In fact it's something like 5% of the population will experience some degree of PTSD at some point in their lives as a result of psychological trauma.
Rape victims, assault victims, victims of car crashes and nautarual disasters also can experience PTSD.
For what it's worth I'm permanatwly disabled from the PTSD I incurred as a result of my combat experiences in Iraq. from my personal experiences I can tell you that manytimes combat vets tend to have several exceptionally traumatic events from a deployment while most non-combat trauma victims tend to have only one or two traumatic events (and I mean "only" very lightly. Any trauma intense enough to invoke PTSD obviously was exceptionally distressing to the victim to evoke PTSD.
I'm not trying to be snarky with you, I'm just very educated on PTSD.

(23,292 posts)as far as I know. I would imagine just seeing a traumatic event, a mass killing, a person being tortured, could trigger PTSD. I don't know what his duties were, but again, he had severe issues before he was sent to Iraq.
