Senator Ted Cruz (R-Tex), a first-term senator voted into Congress in what became a wave of obstructionist Tea Party candidates, was elected under the guise of reducing big-government spending. Cruzs mission was to undermine President Barack Obamas progressive agenda following his 2009 inauguration, when the president announced his intent to provide financial aid to bankrupt homeowners hard hit by Bushs Great Recession. A worldwide period of economic downturn officially began in December 2007 chiefly caused by tax-cuts for the wealthy, a deregulated Wall Street, and the cost of two off-the-books wars. Former President George W. Bush willingly bailed out Wall Street and the big banks, but did little to aid homeowners left in the lurch.
The New York Times is reporting that Cruzs claim to have financed his fledgling campaign for Senate four years ago was built on a series of inadvertent omissions lies. Cruz claims to have said to his wife Heidi:
Sweetheart, Id like us to liquidate our entire net worth, liquid net worth, and put it into the campaign, who readily agreed.
As it turns out, the decision to pump more than a $1 million into Cruzs successful Tea Party candidacy was made easier by a large loan from Goldman Sachs, where Mrs. Cruz works. That loan was not disclosed in campaign finance reports. Federal campaign finance regulations for congressional candidates are pretty straightforward money coming from loans or lines of credit must be disclosed: Bank loans to candidates and loans derived from advances on a candidates brokerage accounts, credit cards, home equity line of credit, or other lines of credit obtained for use in connection with his or her campaign must be reported by the committee.

(51,907 posts)In 1997, Michael Wayne Haley was arrested after stealing a calculator from Walmart. This was a crime that merited a maximum two-year prison term. But prosecutors incorrectly applied a habitual offender law. Neither the judge nor the defense lawyer caught the error and Haley was sentenced to 16 years.
Eventually, the mistake came to light and Haley tried to fix it. Ted Cruz was solicitor general of Texas at the time. Instead of just letting Haley go for time served, Cruz took the case to the Supreme Court to keep Haley in prison for the full 16 years.
The case reveals something interesting about Cruzs character. Ted Cruz is now running strongly among evangelical voters, especially in Iowa. But in his career and public presentation Cruz is a stranger to most of what would generally be considered the Christian virtues: humility, mercy, compassion and grace. Cruzs behavior in the Haley case is almost the dictionary definition of pharisaism: an overzealous application of the letter of the law in a way that violates the spirit of the law, as well as fairness and mercy.

(2,993 posts)could this lead to his compelled/forced resignation from the Senate? (I haven't read the linked articles yet, but will do so.)

(45,319 posts)the Senate. I think other Republicans are his allies, I'm not interested in writing stories about how they are honorable and he is not. They are in the same Party. There is in fact no such Party as the Tea Party. The 'Tea Party' is a rhetorical construct allowing those 'establishment' Republicans to distance themselves from the others in some way other than in their voting because that voting is identical, cast along Party lines. Republican Party lines.

(9,120 posts)Cruz made sure it went nowhere in the House along with budgets, minimum wage increases, debt ceiling raises, and many other vital duties of Congress. He is destroying the federal govt from inside it with the help and backing of House Tea People.

(9,120 posts)Goldman Sachs is no doubt rooting for and still financing Cruz. To me that means this will get little media coverage and maybe no criticism from the Republican field of maniacs.
