In December of 1980, I was watching a basketball game and missed the announcement made by Howard Cosell of the murder of John Lennon on Monday Night Football. After the basketball game I went to the grocery store and I decided call my mom from a pay phone outside of the store. She broke the news to me about Lennon. I was devastated. I couldn't contain myself as I was crying hard from the shock. I will never forget where I was and what I was doing on the night of December 8, 1980.
Sunday, January 10, 2016 will be a night I will never forget where I was and what I was doing. David Bowie passed away. It was a similar shock as when Lennon died.
What makes the death of beloved musicians so hard on us is that we want them to live forever. I wouldn't care if I died first as long as the musicians that wrote the music that I loved would live forever. Music is universal and it's what makes memories in our lives, whether good or bad, and Bowie had that effect on my life's memories.
We can be heroes, just for one day.

(14,498 posts)In a manner of speaking.
Can you imagine Lennon in his 70's, 80's , 90's?
He wouldn't have been "Lennon."
He would have been someone interesting but he wouldn't have been the "Lennon" you're talking about.

(19,089 posts)One thing I consider: .... John Lennon was an extraordinary songwriter ... I think that John Lennon would have continued to expand his artistic horizons, and explored new frontiers in musical art ...
I think John would be just as thoughtful and innovative now as he was then ... My opinion ...

From 1976. David Bowie was influencing culture.
I was not a fan, but this film made a difference.

(12,867 posts)I was at the concert in Alpine Valley Wisconsin the night before Stevie Ray perished in the helicopter crash. Eric Clapton was the headliner and was great, but Stevie Ray Vaughan was beyond awesome and stole the show.
Everyone eventually shuffles off the mortal coil, but it's very sad when a great talent is taken from us too soon.

(63,221 posts)I haven't really commented because I am still processing. Bowie was probably one of my favorite musical artists of all times. It's funny, but just this weekend I was thinking of my favorite voices of all times and for male artists, he was at the top along w/ Freddie Mercury.
I had no idea he was sick. I guess I thought he was one of those people who would live forever.
