Interpreting it as poutrage seems as both as valid and as effective as the perception of the original offense itself. Though no doubt, a creative distinction lies within.

considered to be a verbal assault. But the very word that represents the reason you exist as a human being is offensive? Maybe creamy Palmolive dish liquid should be considered offensive because it's been used in quite a few porn movies to represent semen.

I hate those "He was the world's tallest man. Then he was offended by THIS" type of headlines, but I just had to find out the back story.
