Six when "liberated." I don't know how old he was when he got the tattoo.

Imagine doing any of that to a child. To anyone, to be sure, but especially such a young child.

neighborhood in Brooklyn once a week and sell women's clothes out of the trunk of his car. In the summer he wore a short-sleeved shirt and I could see the numbers on his arm. I asked my mother about and she told me to ask my father, so I did.

He was at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, but nothing, he said, prepared him for what he saw when they opened the gates at Dachau. I was six at the time and he told me the whole story. Then, a bit later, we both watched a documentary on a local NYC TV station. It was called, "Remember Us."

My mother did not want me to watch, but my Dad insisted. I am forever grateful that he let me watch and that I was able to have breakfast with him this morning.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?

This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.

As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
