Less than 48 hours after Robert Lewis Dear shot 11 people, killing a police officer, a young mother and an Iraq war veteran at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Republican congressman Michael McCaul started making irrational and unfounded excuses for the shooter. I don't think it would fall under quite the definition of domestic terrorism, said McCaul, Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, during an interview on ABC News This Week with George Stephanopoulos. It's a tragedy. Its, I think, a mental health crisis.
-snip-
Are we actually supposed to believe that he randomly or accidentally targeted a Planned Parenthood clinic? Are we supposed to believe that it was only his poor mental health condition that caused him to choose such a place to cause murder and mayhem?
Early facts suggest it was far more nefarious and was indeed a form of domestic terrorism. According to NBC News, in his early interviews Dear referenced Planned Parenthood selling "baby parts" as part of his rationale for the attack. Just three months ago, conservative propaganda videos about Planned Parenthood went viral. They were clearly seen by Dear and impacted him deeply. Could it be that McCaul isn't quick to call Dear a terrorist because he, himself, is so publicly opposed to Planned Parenthood?
What's wild is that conservatives regularly speak about how ISIS uses propaganda videos to influence impressionable minds all over the world. They know that the purpose of those propaganda videos is to incite people to join their cause. Yet, somehow, conservatives think none of the steps that lead to terrorism abroad produce terrorists here.

Contrary to Republican claims, the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooter was not a left wing activist. The shooter was a conservative and according to the data, extremist Republicans and conservatives are the real terror threat to the American people.
A New York Times profile described the Planned Parenthood shooter as living in a trailer with a black cross painted on one end. Robert L. Dear was seen by a neighbor handing out anti-Obama pamphlets. Dear was described in the profile as generally conservative, but not obsessed with politics.
In short, the Planned Parenthood shooter fit the profile of anti-government, extremist Republicans who represent the biggest threat to the American people. To be clear, the anti-government extremist Republican is different from the typical Fox News watching, Republican voting relative who speaks about Obamacare with disgust while happily collecting their Medicare.
According to Charles Kurzman and David Schanzer, data suggests that the homegrown extremist is a much bigger threat that ISIS or Al Qaeda:

(58,724 posts)Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) addressed the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooting, in which two civilians and a police officer were killed when a gunman opened fire at the women's health clinic on Friday.
"The Colorado Springs tragedy is domestic terrorism, especially for those us in the pro-life movement," Huckabee wrote on Twitter.

In the space of less than a week, the United States experienced two completely unrelated, yet similar, terrorist attacks. Robert Dear shot up a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs on November 27, killing three and wounding nine. Syed Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, blasted away an office party at a regional center in San Bernardino, California, killing 14 and wounding 21, on December 2.
Both Dear and Farook were American citizens. Both were apparently motivated by an extremist religious ideology. Dear is a radical evangelist who had a history of intimidating people with his extreme Christian views. Malik pledged allegiance to ISIS (DAESH) the morning of their attack.
-snip-
Yet, American right wing news used the two attacks to obfuscate the religious motivations of Dear and condemn Islam generally in the case of Farook and Malik. Fox News, the frothy bullhorn of Americas conservative media, provides a perfect example. On Friday, Foxs lead headline was: TERRORISM HITS HOME: FBI finally calls investigation into Southern Cal massacre an act of terrorism; female gunman took online oath to ISIS chief
-snip-
Foxs handling of Farooks and Maliks shooting contrasts starkly with its reporting on Dears shooting of a Planned Parenthood. Fox repeatedly referred to Dear as the gunman and did not mention his religion or discuss terrorism as a possibility. It only briefly stated that it was not clear if his motive was related to the organization. This statement was preposterous on its face. The article then speculated about Dears mental health.
The article described the police officer, Garrett Swasey, who was murdered by Dear, as a courageous man and loving father who drew strength and inspiration from his Christian faith. While this is perfectly reasonable coverage of a shooting victim, its juxtaposition with reporting that pretends that no religious motive for the attacks could exist, is a way of obfuscating the radicalism that drove Dear. When a shooter is a Muslim radical, Fox blames Islam. When the shooter is a Christian radical, Fox fawns over Christianity.

(17,199 posts)The former GOP frontrunner ignored the murder of three people, including a police officer, allegedly by Robert Lewis Dear on Black Friday at a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic, just ten days ago.
He also ignored the massacre of nine churchgoers attending a Bible study in Charleston, South Carolina, allegedly by Dylann Roof, or the work of the anti-abortion Christian terrorists known as the Army of God.
Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber, was responsible for the deaths of 168 people and 600 injured in the largest act of domestic terrorism to date.
And let's not forget the Ku Klux Klan.
