Some Christians Are Extremely Unhappy About Starbucks' New Holiday Cups

The absence of snowflakes on the cups "denies the hope of Jesus," one woman claims.

Hilary Hanson
News editor, The Huffington Post

Some people are angry about Starbucks’ new holiday cups. Really angry.

What is the issue, exactly?

In previous years, Starbucks’ iconic holiday cups, which the chain uses in lieu of white cups in November and December, featured wintry or Christmas-themed designs like snowflakes, ornaments and nature scenes. This year, the cups are more minimalist -- a red ombre design that Jeffrey Fields, Starbucks' vice president of design, said was meant to embrace “the simplicity and the quietness” of the holiday season.

This is a huge problem for some people, who feel that the plain red cups are oppressing Christians by insulting Christmas.

“This is a denial of historical reality and the great Christian heritage behind the American Dream that has so benefitted Starbucks,” Andrea Williams of the U.K.-based organization Christian Concern told Breitbart. “This also denies the hope of Jesus Christ and His story so powerfully at this time of year.”

the story is really about what Breitbart says, their old cups were decorated with reindeer and snowflakes, not mangers and crucifixes, and it's doubtful that Starbucks employees are not allowed to greet people with the phrase, "Merry Christmas."

What part of a business being a secular thing don't they understand?

They can Merry Christmas us all to death. I don't care.

Actually, I do try to respond to various holiday greetings in the manner in which I hope they were given. I will cheerfully say Merry Christmas back to someone who said that to me. I'll happily say Seasons Greetings back. Or however I'm greeted. Why can't those assholes just wallow in the goodness of the season, rather than trying to force their narrow perceptions on everyone else?

Dumb question, I know. They won't be happy until they force everyone to conform to their thought. I'm sure they'd all think the Spanish Inquisition didn't go far enough.

These Evangelicals could not have handled 17th century Massachusetts, assuming that some cruel time-lord dumped them there. The old Puritans were very down on iconography (As well as celebrating Christmas, which they outlawed), and would have had fits about images of Baby Jesus and crucifixes.

So the next time the Fundies go railing about Christianity, the Founding Fathers, and how they're being "oppressed" by red Starbucks cups , they're almost full of something that neither looks not smells like Christmas cheer.

Brilliant.

I believe in God; and I don't give a fuck what color paper cup Starbucks pours its coffee in. I ain't playin'.

Enjoy the $4.65 White Chocolate Mocha, kids. Gotta say this though; I'm glad they're pissin' off a buncha well-off white people, because I don't imagine their customer base is very diverse.

I regularly frequent in south Minneapolis.

2/3 of the people there are Somali men no matter what day or time I am there. And they all yell at the top of their lungs at all times, even when speaking to someone two feet away. Twice as loud as that when using a cell phone.

The rest is an olio of all kinds of people from yuppies to hipsters to neighborhood regulars like me.
