WWII, a/k/a "the good war." He came back in one piece, joined the FDNY, married but then at some point not long after, dropped out of society. The FDNY sent a letter stating he was AWOL. The rest of his life he was an alcoholic dishwasher/short order cook. It was probably PTSD but back then no one called it that. I have a photo of him in uniform with his proud parents. The "Good War" destroyed my uncle.
