Old, but could be fun: Top TV Shows among liberals and conservatives. Which do you watch?

In 2012, the parties and political groups will be reaching out to certain demographics, so these lists could come in handy for them. The Democratic Party and liberal groups would do good targeting comedies and late-night talk shows, while the Republican Party and conservative groups would do good targeting reality TV and the History Channel.

Which of these shows do you watch?

Liberal Democrats
1. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
2. The Colbert Report
3. Masterpiece
4. 30 Rock
5. Parks and Recreation
6. The View
7. Glee
8. Modern Family
9. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
10. Treme
11. Cougar Town
12. The Late Show with David Letterman
13. The Soup
14. The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson
15. Aqua Teen Hunger Force
16. Outsourced

18. Saturday Night Live
19. The Office
20. American Masters
21. Project Runway
22. United States of Tara
23. Shameless
24. Parenthood
25. Conan

Conservative Republicans

2. This Old House
3. The 700 Club
4. Swamp Loggers
5. Top Shot

I watch The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The Office, SNL, Parks & Rec, Modern Family, and Conan religiously, but I'll watch Pawn Stars or Mythbusters if I see they're on.

I get a relaxed "all is well with the world" feeling when I turn on a well loved sitcom. I have tons of them saved on my TIVO and I watch many just to relax and to stop thinking, like old Seinfeld episodes or Two and 1/2 Men.

"Conservative Republicans like to watch other people work for free on PBS. No surprise there." Yep. And, it's pretty ironic, considering they're always trying to kill off PBS.

I don't know how they did this poll. The funny thing for me about it is that the shows on the lists that I watch on a fairly regular basis are all on the "Conservatives" list: Antiques Roadshow, This Old House, Hawaii Five-O (McGarrett is such a hottie.) I like many of the shows on the "Liberal" list, but the vast majority of them are on past my bed time. I also don't have cable.

Gotta have my Mythbusters and NCIS for sure (been following NCIS since the days of JAG almost 17 years ago), and American Pickers is just plain fun. And I'm really sorry to have to admit this, but Larry the Cable guy makes me laugh. I can't help it.

I'll watch the Daily Show once in a while (that's the 1 LIB show I counted), but I'm not a Colbert fan. It just doesn't grab me.

including the NBC Thursday night line up (The Office, Parks and Rec, Community). Outsourced was canceled. I'll admit I used to watch it, even though it wasn't that great. I'm not completely surprised it was axed. I hope Community survives. It's a well written show and is pretty funny. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is hysterical though.

Colbert and The Daily Show are definitely shows that would appeal more to liberals than conservatives (while the opposite is true with the 700 Club) but most on the two lists aren't particularly ideological. With some of the comedies, it's usually pretty clear the writing is done by liberals, but then again it shouldn't be a surprise that a creative profession like script writing would draw liberals. Most conservatives are neither very funny or creative.

I don't have cable, but I enjoy Mythbusters and Pawn Stars. I catch those when I can. I'm actually a bit surprised Mythbusters would be in the second list but I think it has to do with it being on the Discovery Channel. Top Gear is fun too but I don't catch it very often.

What's interesting is that the second list draws a lot of older viewers (Leno, Wheel of Fortunes, NCIS, 700 Club)...

However, Robot Chicken is the only thing that will make me put down whatever I am doing and run to the TV. The Lindsay Lohan as the Highlander episode is one of the funniest things ever.

Once Upon a Time

and I'm finally warming up to Doctor Who. It took me a long time to get over David Tennant and Richard T. Davies leaving the show.

My husband watches quite a few of the shows on the Conservative Republicans list, which might explain why I don't like him as much as I used to. I thought it was just because I was jealous because he's retired and I'm not.

Interesting that Liberals watch Letterman and Cons watch Leno.

72. It's actually an index of 'likelihood a viewer is in that demographic'

So:

Meanwhile, “Masterpiece” is the third highest indexing show among liberal Democrats, trailing only the two Comedy Central faux-news programs. “Masterpiece” indexes at a whopping “234,” which means a “Masterpiece” viewer is 134 percent more likely to be a liberal Democrat than the average adult viewer.

So you wouldn't expect overlap. You could get it, if the shows were less popular with 3rd, 4th, etc. demographics, but it's not surprising not to see overlap at the top of each list.

overall. no matter how great/bad the rest of the shows on both lists are.

and i don't believe many conservatives watch the shows on that list. most of the ones i know just watch Fox News all day.
