(27,247 posts)and there has been a lot of flooding around here. Today I've seen lots of rescue helicopters buzzing about, firetrucks, police cars, you name it. Lots of evacuation orders have been issued, and there have been lots of traffic jams. It's surreal.

(269,503 posts)Dominica had close to 15 inches in less than 24 hours as a result of TS Erika.
This is definitely a feature of climate change - this heavy rain is so damned destructive.

(25,887 posts)Levies broke in that city in Ibaraki, 6,900 house damaged. Rescue was prompt, still going on. Luckily, not many casualties so far, I think 7 injured. Rice fields flooded right before harvest. Thought the typhoon was going to directly hit my city, but we only had rain, then high winds with no rain, later distant lightning.

(25,887 posts)the angry goblin. Indeed.
Art_from_Ark
(27,247 posts)on my way to work in a neighboring town. At that time, I was not aware of the flooding a little to the north of where I was passing through. I heard about it later from a greengrocer. Later, I received an emergency notice on my cell phone advising evacuation from one of the areas that I had passed through earlier in the day. Then, on my way back home tonight, I saw that the cops had blocked two major roads that led to Joso City-- one going west, and one going north. One of the roads crosses over the Kinugawa River. I had to be extra careful driving home.
And yes, "Kinu" in this case means "angry goblin" (or usually translated as "angry demon" 鬼怒川.

(25,887 posts)people in the evacuation center (I guess in Joso city) haven't received food or blankets yet, 12 hours after being evacuated. No radio or TV, the evacuation center is surrounded by water, there are pregnant women, babies, old people...

(269,503 posts)121 rescued - this is a major disaster.
Huge problem with radiation water overflowing - now contained.

(27,247 posts)Joso City isn't really connected with the radiation disaster. That's about 130 miles to the north.

(269,503 posts)The heavy rain, which is expected to spread north on Friday, has also caused additional leaks of radioactive water at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
The plants operator, Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), said rain had overwhelmed the sites drainage pumps, sending hundreds of tonnes of contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean.
Workers at the Fukushima plant have had to store huge quantities of contaminated water used to cool melted fuel in three badly damaged reactors in thousands of steel tanks.
