Bill to regulate e-cigarettes clears California legislative hurdle

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. | BY SHARON BERNSTEIN

The California State Senate on Thursday passed a bill to regulate electronic cigarettes as tobacco products, sending the measure to the Assembly where a similar bill died earlier this year.

The bill by State Senator Mark Leno, a Democrat from San Francisco, would ban the use of e-cigarettes, also known as vapor cigarettes or vapes, in the workplace, at schools and other places where cigarettes already are forbidden, and would require that they be sold in child-resistant packaging.

Sale of e-cigarettes to minors already is banned but the bill would require businesses wishing to sell them to obtain a license.

E-cigarettes generally contain nicotine, drawn into the lungs after it is heated in a flavored liquid. The vapor also contains some formaldehyde and other chemicals, according to Leno.

It's just a start. They want unreasonable bans on flavors and high taxes on vaping. Skeeter Barnes Aug 2015 #10

Not this old false rumor again.

The ingredient they are looking to describe is called propylene glycol and is the same thing used in fog machines.

Anti freeze as an ingredient is another favorite misnomer. $10 will get you $20 some idiot claimed that as well.

After trying and failing with Chantix, Wellbutrin, patches, gum and even hypnosis, I'll have 7 months smoke free tomorrow thanks to vapor. Throw away those cigarettes and get yourself a good variable wattage mod and dripper. It is so much better than smoking. You'll feel better, smell better and it's cheaper, too!

The only place I vape indoors is at home and I'm OK with it being limited to outdoors only at work or in public areas. Childproof caps are a good idea as well but most of the juice I get online has them already.

If the Democratic party is successful in banning flavors or making vaping prohibitively expensive, I will never vote again and Democrats are all I have ever voted for. I've voted for Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama as well as straight D in local elections. Prohibitionist Dems are unreasonable on this issue and it could cost the party a lot of votes!
