Clerk who denied same-sex marriage license in Ky., temporarily shuts office for 'computer upgrades'

Breaking News update update to this story:[

MOREHEAD, Ky. - For two months since the United States Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage across the country, a clerk in a rural Kentucky county has refused to issue any marriage licenses, citing her Christian faith and constitutional right to religious freedom.

On Thursday, Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis' office refused to issue a marriage license to another couple, William Smith Jr. and James Yates. It was their third attempt to get a license.

U.S. District Judge David Bunning had already ordered Davis to issue marriage licenses two weeks ago. He later delayed that ruling until Aug. 31 or until the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling. The appeals court did so on Wednesday, denying Davis' appeal.

But a deputy clerk in Davis' office told Smith and Yates on Thursday that the office believes Bunning's delay remains in effect until Aug. 31. He refused to give his name or give them a license.

In order to be found in contempt of the District Court order affirmed by the 6th Circuit, she has to again deny a license.

This is all part of the sequence.

It is her full and eventual intention to be jailed for contempt.

Do you have any idea how much money her legal team has collected in donations thus far?

If this thing plays out correctly, it will end very well for her.

She will go to jail for contempt for the several months remaining in her term. After her term expires, she will be released, as the order is then moot.

She will then be a sought-after speaker and author among the nutters, and she will make good coin doing that.

Her other option was to continue in a low-pay job in podunk Kentucky and to live a life of obscurity. She is now internationally famous and seen as a hero by those who support her cause.

Being jailed for contempt will be the single best thing that has ever happened, or would have otherwise ever happened, in her life.

IF MLK had been in it for a large cash payout, that is.

simply looking for a payday from the far right hate cult? Usually when a winger in any business gets public notice for hatred "based on religious conviction" (which really is illogical since no one is forcing the clerk to personally marry another woman), the wingnut followers reward them in cash, and lots of it. I can't help but suspect that that's the hope of this clerk and many like her. I doubt if she would be as passionate about denying licenses to people wearing fabric of mixed fibers or someone who works at Red Lobster; her "religious convictions" don't run that deep.
