Polls show him to be the preferred candidate among not just all Republican voters but also the partys vocal evangelical subset.
Hes more beloved than Mike Huckabee, a former evangelical pastor, or Ted Cruz, an evangelical pastors son, or Scott Walker, who said during the recent Republican debate: Its only by the blood of Jesus Christ that Ive been redeemed.

Paul Krugman:
Actually, nothing because those alleged principles were never real. Conservative religiosity, conservative faith in markets, were never about living a godly life or letting the invisible hand promote entrepreneurship. Instead, it was all as Corey Robin describes it: Conservatism is
a reactionary movement, a defense of power and privilege against democratic challenges from below, particularly in the private spheres of the family and the workplace.
Its really about whos boss, and making sure that the man in charge stays boss. Trump is admired for putting women and workers in their place, and it doesnt matter if he covets his neighbors wife or demands trade wars.
The point is that Trump isnt a diversion, hes a revelation, bringing the real motivations of the movement out into the open.

(82,849 posts)People who long for authoritarian figures to decide what's what. I remember in the 1980s seeing photos from demonstrations in the Soviet Union, and there would be people shuffling along holding portraits of Stalin. I wondered at that for quite some time before I decided that for some people, the time of Stalin was a time of great stability. Everyone knew what they were expected to do, how they were expected to act, and what the penalties were for noncompliance. Some people adapted to that milieu quite readily, and were able to prosper in some small, mean little way.
When the Soviet Union began to crumble, the old verities were crumbling right along with them, and a lot of people found it hard if not impossible to adapt. They longed for the days when Joseph Stalin ran things. They had survived those times, so the caprices of Soviet leadership never landed squarely on them. Their lives may not have been rich and full, but they were predictable and steady.
T Rump is out on the stump promising facile solutions to vexing problems. Never mind the cost or the mechanism or the difficulties that solving those problems might entail, T Rump has the answer! It won't affect his fans, because they're his fans and they will be protected. The wrong people, the different people, the (let's face it) scary people will be the ones to suffer. They'll be the ones visited with sweet retribution for their disruptive ways. T Rump will see to it, because he's so successful. He tells us that all the time. And have you seen his hat? American will be great again under T Rump! Don't quite know what that might mean, but being great sounds pretty good.
