Pitts: Donald Trump is No. 1? Don't let that fool you

Yes, Herman Cain was once No. 1, too, and we know what happened with that.

Yes, the fact that he is No. 1 probably reflects name recognition as much as anything else.

And no, he will never be his party's nominee, much less this country's president. It won't happen even if GOP Chairman Reince Priebus has to personally shoot him with tranquilizer darts on the way to the podium to stop it.

All that said, don't let anyone tell you it means nothing that Donald Trump has surged to the top of the Republican field, according to a new USA Today/Suffolk University poll. Don't let anybody say we ought not note with alarm the fact that 17 percent of Republicans think this loud-mouthed, attention-seeking self-aggrandizing carny barker is fit to be president. Trump has climbed six percentage points since June, vaulting ahead of Jeb Bush, who remained steady at 14 percent.

I encourage you to click this link. Leonard skewers Trump and the GOP in a most entertaining way. And who among us doesn't enjoy that?

As though they were somehow equivalent? And Teddy Roosevelt with Gerald Ford and Bush the elder? At least he had the decency to leave W off the list of supposedly admirable Republican presidents.

Romney is like the last party guest who refuses to admit the party is over despite the fact that someone in the kitchen is face down in a puddle of beer and there are five cigarette butts stabbed into a stick of butter.

They ran Romney so he would be labeled a loser and TAKE A HINT.

They may do the same thing for Trump.
