(7,234 posts)As long as you make it legal to own such destructive devices of death, it will continue to happen.
We need to scrap the 2nd amendment and make all private firearm ownership a felony, if you want to go hunting go to the store and buy your food like a normal person or use an air rifle like in the UK.
The UK has the most ruthless radicals living there but you will never hear about a mass shooting there. Why? Because they banned guns.

(5,714 posts)The idea that gun ownership is a sacred individual right and is the only safeguard against "Tyranny" is deep in the DNA of (mostly white, FWIW) America, and has been for a long time now. If anything, since the 1960s and 1970s the Gun Culture has gotten more angry, irrational, and defiant.
I really don't see much of anything changing, other than the body count getting progressively higher.

Its not outrageous to assert that there are too many weapons in this country, and too many people with absolutely no business anywhere near them.

(33,400 posts)Duh.
Who's claiming that there is a perfect solution that eliminates all guns? Not I. It's far too late for that.
I want fewer incompetent, yet law-abiding, citizens to WANT to own guns. I want more hurdles, more expense, more hassles. I want FEWER 3-year olds shooting their siblings, fewer impulsive suicides, fewer angry divorced men committing familycides, fewer armed schizophrenics.
That would be an improvement.
Criminals are another matter - was Mr. Abdulazeez a criminal? Or a law-abiding 2nd amendment enthusiast, until he became a terrorist?

(269,157 posts)What was Britain's role in that mess?
That was a horrific act of revenge.
It is not only about guns - it is also about the consequences of some of our government's actions. Any people who believe their governments can slaughter people in other nations without consequences is beyond delusional - as are their governments.
Thank Bushco, Blair, Sharon, Bibi et al for this entire fucking mess.

(1,151 posts)Statistically they are not something the federal (or state) can do much about with laws. If we assume that 10 killers murder 100 people a year this way (those numbers are high), that's something like
0.00000003% of the population
killing
0.0000003% of the population
There are quite a few things that kill 0.0000003% of the population per year. I imagine everyone would be unhappy if the government tried to "fix"/"stop" all of those things.
There are no laws the federal government can enforce to "fix"/"stop" these killing. Maybe EXTREME surveillance and/or keeping us in cages will make a significant improvement (save 50 lives/year).
That's not saying gun laws are stupid though I'm against many. But those 10 murderers are probably not going to be deterred by any law. They plan it, and have other options (explosives, fire, poison, a big truck, an airplane). It makes more sense to base gun laws on non-anonymous mass killings (e.g. boss/ex-spouse and anyone in the area). Or on non-mass shooting. Many more of those types of murder occur each year and there are laws that could reasonably make a difference in people acting on short-term emotion rather than acting on a thought out plan.
maxsolomon
(33,400 posts)At this point, I agree with your assertion: there is no way to stop these amoklauf shootings. There are simply too many guns in the hands of too many idiots.
whatthehey
(3,660 posts)1) They do, and with higher body counts than guns. OKC, Happy Land, Bath, even 9/11
2) The reason guns are used more often is simplicity. It's easier to shoot a gun than build a bomb or even set a fire. It's the same reason most people take a car to work than ride the bus or bicycle. But if we removed all cars tomorrow, people would still get to work. If we took all guns away tomorrow, people driven to mass murder would still do it.
maxsolomon
(33,400 posts)And that is the point.
Guns are easy to use, that simplicity facilitates impulsive action. guns don't require special knowledge or planning.

(26,001 posts)You are confused with pro-Proliferation arguments that muddy whether the guns are simply "sold" outright from American gun stores, or stolen and sold on the black market later.
The Atlantic has a good overview of the situation:

(1,098 posts)"We need stronger laws" they say. No, laws don't work. Criminals that don't care about human life don't care about laws.
The only way to stop the +30,000 gun deaths is to remove civilian access to firearms entirely, no exceptions.
You sure are a trusting soul though...
