That a wire fence is all that was protecting a French military base storing ammunition beggars belief!

(12,704 posts)detonators would be stored in vault like concrete structures. If all there is the same kind of fence that is concerning. However Europe and France have a much larger population of Islamists and for that fact alone I would have thought weapons facilities would have better security.
I find it boggling to have so little security these days. I rather doubt that the detonators and explosives are just going to sit in someone's closet.

(17,086 posts)We always had a "Post Guard Duty" that rotated from unit to unit and which was responsible for extra security at various high security locations, like ammo stores, on base. My first time doing it was Christmas Eve, which did not go over well with my bride, who had arrived just that week to join me.
I would assume that some electronic surveillance has been upgraded as well, but not a whole lot, at least in the Army - they have bodies at their beck and call 24/7. The French base commander probably isn't, anymore.
