Police in Shelby, North Carolina bought a Burger King meal for the white man who allegedly killed nine people at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina after they arrested him Thursday, The Charlotte Observer reported.
Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford told the newspaper that the only conversation his officers had with 21-year-old Dylann Roof was about food. The alleged gunman told them that he was hungry after eating nothing but some chips he'd bought at a Charlotte gas station before he was arrested in a traffic stop.
"He was very quiet, very calm. He didnt talk, Ledford said, as quoted by The Observer. He sat down here very quietly. He was not problematic.
Ledford also confirmed to Yahoo! News that police officers bought a hamburger for their infamous detainee.

(115,692 posts)There's all sorts of outrage about this, but last I heard we didn't starve prisoners, however reprehensible the charges against them might be. I would be a bit annoyed if they'd taken him to a four star restaurant and served him chateaubriand, but I'm not about to get my panties in a wad over giving him a greasy burger.

(31,234 posts)SOP, or was this a special favor for this kid. The Charleston police are embroiled in a wrongful death, and I hope this wasn't their version of a high five for the shooter. Otherwise, I have no problem with it either.
I have much more of a problem with the Judge who tried to paint Roof's family as victims, even before the dead are buried.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,692 posts)because it's easy, fast and cheap, and because it sometimes helps get their cooperation (the good cop part of the good cop-bad cop routine). I very much doubt they were doing it as a special favor to him.

(3,569 posts)Ever. I've been in jail a plenty of times and you wait for your food like every other person. This is exceptional treatment here.....

And while it may be true that if he'd been black he probably would have been shot or at least tased, that doesn't mean the cops shouldn't have fed him, or that he should also have been shot or tased or otherwise abused. Nobody should be abused in the course of an arrest, not even this asshole. I do think the fact that this dirtbag was given a $5 fast food meal is not worthy of all this outrage. He'll be eating prison meals for the rest of his life.

You were probably a petty criminal .
They arrest a high profile case like this they will not only buy fast food the cops will order
a pizza and have it delivered if he or she is talking.

(181 posts)I sincerely doubt they would have fed him, no matter what his condition. In actuality he probably wouldn't have been alive. The double standard is appalling.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,692 posts)However, it doesn't mean there was anything terribly wrong with feeding Burger King crap to this guy. Of course, if he'd been black he probably wouldn't have been arrested for shooting black people in a black church.

(154,021 posts)It has none to do with Roof, but processing and getting him to a jail that could handle him. He is a high profile detainee.
They have done this in my county when doing a transport from an area up to two hours away from the downtown jail.
The optics look horrible, but this is really not a big deal, and quite standard procedure.

(21,506 posts)I do have a problem with choosing burger king.
And if the government reimburses that purchase i have a real problem with it.
BK is doing all it can to avoid paying US taxes. Our government should not be supporting this company with our tax dollars.

U.S. companies doing inversions - which involve buying a foreign company and assuming its tax nationality to cut overall tax costs - have been blasted as tax dodgers by Democrats and liberal groups. President Barack Obama has criticized a "herd mentality" by companies seeking deals to escape U.S. taxes.
Feeding the kid is normal procedure when transferring prisoners using government funds to do it at a company doing all it can to avoid US taxes not so much.
I will never darken BK's door again because of this move.

(154,021 posts)Serious.
Who pays taxes or not, is well not one of the priorities of a cop in the field, for the most part.
Egnever
(21,506 posts)That has no bearing on if it should happen or not. Our tax payer dollars should not be going to corporations working overtime to avoid taxes period.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)the BK is not owned by the corporation, but a licensee, most are not.
secondly, while on principle I agree, I am willing to bet that even the people back at HQ doing the reimbursement, or the government body that votes on the budget for the police department has no clue either.
So while it would make sense on an ideological level, you would do better in informing those who make policy about this. There is a lot that media does not mostly cover, or cover where your local city council member, or supervisor will read it.
And at times I doubt some can connect the dots either.
Egnever
(21,506 posts)I agree but you should be telling other people that?
I said in my original post I have no problem with them feeding him and then pointed out that I do have a problem with government dollars going to tax avoiders and so far all you are doing is making excuses as why that is just fine.
Maybe just maybe my pointing it out in this thread and others will get the issue more recognition. Probably not but your idea that I shouldn't bring it up because they just didn't know or that some guy is exempt because he is just a poor franchisee is just nonsense.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)likely have no clue what the corporate parent office does to avoid taxes.
Clear enough for you?
You want this policy to change? You need to educate those who approve how those taxes are spent. And even then, I do not guarantee success.
Egnever
(21,506 posts)More nonsense.
Do you really think you told me anything?
Obviously the beat cop has no impact on policy. Do you really walk around thinking people need stuff explained to them by you?

(4,959 posts)for a large group arrest (around 400 people, anti-war direct action). Very different scenario, sure, but it took hours and hours to process everyone and they had to be fed.
It's not uncommon if it makes the most sense given the circumstances/timing/logistics of processing and moving an arrestee.

(12,778 posts)They had to feed the guy, after all. Maybe it was going to be hours before they could get him a jail meal and they had procedures to just get him a quick meal with as little fuss as possible. Maybe he was talking and they wanted to keep him going by acting friendly. Whatever the reason I would imagine the officers were following their department's procedures.
I seriously doubt a crappy Burger King meal was some sort of "high five" as some have suggested.
Don't worry - he's in for a lifetime of really shitty food. He'll be lucky to get toast with breakfast.
