Pure and simple. That's what it represents. The Civil War was fought to protect slavery and the economic system it supported. Despite the Confederacy's loss and the end of slavery, this vile banner still flies in those states. It is obscene. Someone there should go and cut it down today.

official SC state flag. If I am not mistaken that is protocol for displaying the flag. Up here where we are close to Canada some of our businesses like to display the Canadian Maple Leaf beside the US flag. It is always display several inches below the US flag. And several have actually been taken down by protesters when the stores ignored the policy.

The fact that it has remained at full staff is probably all that need be said about South Carolina. (Side note to South Carolina residents: If you don't care for my blanket characterization of all the people in your state, please feel free to do something about this; I will gladly change my mind.)

Although one of my grandfathers was born there (he ended up as deputy mayor of New York City, so he didn't stick around).

I do have some friends who live there, though, and NONE of them are in the slightest like Nikki Haley and the Hate Machine (if that inspires some rock group, I hereby withdraw my consent to use the name!).

The governor there basically said we would 'never know' why these things happen...what a lying sack of shit she is, she KNOWS why.
