I had to have my Boston Terrier, Casey, put to sleep this morning. Over the years he developed a collapsed trachea, then he lost his eye sight in 2012. Despite that, people always said he acted like he didn't know he was blind. Then more recently he was diagnosed with pancreatitis and that combined with everything else finally got the best of him.
After crying most of the time since returning home, I know I will do better each day but I am lost at this moment.

(1,893 posts)floriduck, my heart goes out to you in no small way. It really is the worst. It tears you up completely.
All I can say is I'm right there with you. My dog has terminal cancer and we're taking it day by day. We're hoping for a couple more months with him before his quality of life declines.
The bond you form with a dog is like nothing else... shit, I'm gonna start crying. I'm just really, really sorry. I wish I could say something to ease your pain but I don't have the words. As much as we wish we could walk around the pain we have to walk through it. I'm so sorry.
Big big hugs to you. I know we'll both get through it somehow but I know what you mean about feeling lost.

We've had to put too many beloved pets down over the years and it is one of the hardest things a person has to do. It is sometimes harder than a person.

(102,306 posts)We had relatives that breed them (humanly). We believe it was heart worm in 72 that took him from us. One of our daughters has a brown version. The Boston Terrier is one of the few dogs considered to be Made in America.

(7,499 posts)I know it hurts like crazy. Two and a half years ago we had to have our twelve year old bichon put to sleep due to liver failure. He woke us up vomiting on Friday morning, and Monday morning we had to say goodbye. It absolutely broke my heart. He was an angel; sweet, kind, gentle, and showed me loads of love.
His brother and litter mate is nearly fifteen and in declining health. I know what's coming and dread it terribly.
Lots of hugs and healing thoughts as you face the days and weeks ahead. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

(15,882 posts)sit with and touch, they will help drain that sadness away, and lick the tears too. If you do that, take chicken treats. Like it's a wake. 'Cause it is.
If you have no place at the ready, a suggestion is some place where the city houses animals before they turn their backs on them is a good place to go. A few of the cities still call these places "shelters".
But anyway, you could do each other some good in your time of need. Calm them, give you some perspective.
Hard at first (take a lot of tissue, don't let the dog eat it), but a week later you will understand why you did it.
Thank you for being a friend to Casey. You will be ok.

(7,036 posts)I am so sorry for your loss. My Doggirl was my constant companion during my cancer treatment. Hers was not curable and I did not make her suffer with treatment. We put her down five days after my brother-in-law died in a lawn mower accident on our property. I found him. He was really dreading her loss..he was gone before she was. It was a tough time.
It has been two years. I miss both of them.

(921 posts)I know how hard it is to put your best friend in the world down...I hope you take comfort in your memories and also try to be good to yourself. After we had to put our dog down we decided to make a garden in his memory and it helped us get through the grief...but nothing takes away how much you miss them.
When the time is right I hope you adopt another furry friend, they can't replace what you lost, but they provide a wonderful opportunity to love again. Best wishes to you.

(103,856 posts)The ONLY way I've come up with to feel better about these situations is to tell myself that their life would have been so much shorter/bleaker had we not rescued them (all our pets have been rescues),, and we gave them all we had, but mother nature always "wins"..
and the fact that they do not know they are dying..
Veterinary euthanasia is actually quite a blessing. Each time I have held them in my lap or sat on the floor cradling their head as they drifted off..without pain.. There is pain.. OURS ! but even that is a blessing because it reinforces how much we loved them and how much they will be missed..
My 40 year old son still has his dog's collar hanging on a peg in his kitchen.. Blanca died decades ago
No matter how long ago they passed, they are still alive in our hearts..
