A while back, I wrote a controversial OP about a very brave woman, Molly Norris.
I encourage every single DUer to read the thread I wrote, describing the terror apologia of Glenn Greenwald, who sought to mitigate the fatwa and other death threads issued against Press who dared to draw and depict the entity someone thinks is a god-like figure. I encourage every single DUer to read the terror apologia offered in that thread, in defense of Mr. Greenwald, and in defense of Anwar Awlaki himself. And no---I am not naming names or calling anyone out, because I think the posts in that thread speak for themselves.
Three days after I wrote my OP.....this article appeared in the NY Daily News.
So we have Molly Norris. And Pam Geller. Pam, who sees Sharia Law in turkeys, and is otherwise batshit insane. They have both done exactly the same damn thing: They challenged the patriarchy that tells us that a male godhead figure is unassailable.
And because he is unassailable, not to be mocked, not to be even drawn, the oppression of women in that cultural context is reinforced and buttressed, and not to be questioned.
I don't have to like speech to see its value. I don't have to like the speaker, or their motives, to appreciate the message. And because I am principled, and consistent, I don't think either Molly Norris or Pam Geller deserve death because they pissed off some men who think a man who apparently died 1,400 years ago cannot be drawn in a cartoon.

Stopping that was a true affront to free speech. It also gave in to people who would murder over such a thing.
