North Carolina OKs constitutional same-sex marriage banBy Tom Curry, msnbc.com National Affairs Writer

North Carolina voters Tuesday approved a proposed amendment to the states constitution which would limit marriage to traditional one man-one woman marriages.
The amendment says: Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. In effect, it would bar the state from giving legal recognition to civil unions between same-sex couples.
Under North Carolina law, same-sex marriages are already banned.
And opponents of the constitutional amendment did not make the argument that defeating it was a prelude to changing the law so that same-sex couples could legally marry in North Carolina.
This is not a conversation about a possible change of law down the road, said Paul Guequierre, a spokesperson for the Coalition to Protect All North Carolina Families, the main group rallying opposition to the amendment, on Monday.
By approving the amendment, North Carolina joins 28 other states that have state constitutional provisions limit marriage to man-woman unions.

(5,179 posts)Disappointing. But sadly unsurprising.
This is the fight the Right have been waiting for.
They seem to love losing.

(10,584 posts)How so? This is the 30th state they have enshrined discrimination into the constitution against LGBT families. I do believe however it may be one of their last "victories".

After the sloppy effort to blame black voters for Prop 8 in California, a statistical analysis revealed is more religion based than color.
http://www.letcaliforniaring.org/site/c.ltJTJ6MQIuE/b.4863891/k.35FC/Driving_Factors_of_Prop_8_Vote.htm
Since the passage of Proposition 8, much has been said about the supposed dramatic opposition to marriage equality among African Americans, fueled by National Election Pool (NEP) figures based on sampling in only a few precincts that erroneously indicated 70 percent of Californias African Americans supported Proposition 8. The study found that when church attendance was factored out, however, there was no significant difference between African Americans and other groups.
In other words, people of all races and ethnicities who worship at least once a week overwhelmingly supported Proposition 8, with support among white, Asian and Latino frequent churchgoers actually being greater than among African Americans.
...
Moreover, the study found that the level of support for Proposition 8 among African Americans was nowhere close to the NEP exit poll 70 percent figure. The study looked at pre- and post-election polls and conducted a sophisticated analysis of precinct-level voting data from five California counties with the highest African-American populations (Alameda (Oakland), Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego and San Francisco).[1] Based on this, it concludes that the level of African-American support for Proposition 8 was in the range of 57-59 percent. Its precinct-level analysis also found that many precincts with few black voters supported Proposition 8 at levels just as high or higher than those with many black voters.
As discussed earlier, the 57-59 percent figure while higher than white and Asian-American voters is largely explained by the higher rates of African-American church attendance: 57 percent of African Americans attend church at least once a week, compared to 42 percent of whites and 40 percent of Asian Americans.

Sadly, as predicted, voters in North Carolina passed Amendment One, the law that bans already-banned same-sex marriage and tacks on a gratuitous "and no civil unions, either." As Joan McCarter explained:
That's why just about everyoneincluding North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue, former President Bill Clinton (and his daughter), Episcopal bishops, hundreds of business leaders, religious leaders, and members of both partiesopposed it. Because it's hateful and wrong. But apparently, the state's voters disagreed.
Way to go, North Carolina. You must be so proud.
