(65,340 posts)(not my own) to safety. It was an automatic response. I would almost certainly have done so for any living being, as I think most people would. The reflex in most is not limited to close friends and family--and not always even limited to "cute" or safe animals. I recently read of a woman who died trying to save a possum from being hit by a train! Adult possums are scary, not at all cute, yet she died trying to save the poor creature.
I doubt my rescuer genes would lead me that far, but those altruistic tendencies are surprisingly powerful in our species, at least among non-sociopaths.

(55,981 posts)Reminds me of TV Evangulists. Lots of people have strong Faith in them. No matter how you rationalize it, it's blind Faith.
All the Progressives say it's a bad thing but Obama says to trust him and his secret deal. He hasn't shown any reason other that trust in him. That's blind faith.

(55,981 posts)I question all my elected representatives. That's my obligation as a citizen and especially as a Democrat. I neither twist facts nor support twisted facts. Just because you disagree doesn't make them twisted. If I twist facts that is the time to point it out and not just accuse me.
I recognize the need for some to have an authoritarian leader that they can trust completely. Most of us were raised that way. IMO it's a conservative mindset and very dangerous to our democracy. In 2007 I was fully committed to supporting Barack Obama and I believe he is a good man and greatly appreciate him as a president personality. I think he has done a lot of good, but I do not agree with all he does and feel I should be able to express my feeling on a "politically liberal" message board w/o derision.

(99,710 posts)The point was I would be willing to risk my life to save another person's life or I would hope I could muster the courage to do so... No, I do not believe in human sacrifices.
I have been past the Ambassador Hotel which is now a school several times...Several people including Roosevelt Grier risked their lives to disarm Sirhan Sirhan when he assassinated Bobby Kennedy. They were a second late. I'd like to think if I was there I would have been one of them...
I have only been in L A three years and have never been to Staples or Chavez Ravine though I have been past them several times. I hope to change it.

(99,710 posts)I will admit that bravery and putting yourself at personal risk is easier in theory but in the case of the Ambassador Hotel "ordinary people" did but I don't know if ordinary people are as big as Rosey Grier. Whatever he was he wasn't bullet proof...
I also think it's likely that if someone puts themselves at risk it will be reflexively before fear which is natural emotion kicks in.

The armchair warrior thing keeps coming to mind.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)Just how do you divine that over the internet and more importantly how do you prove it...
The "armchair warrior" appellation would have much more credence if you can point to instances where I had the opportunity to act valorously and demurred, wouldn't it?
But alas, we are making progress...We do seem to agree that there are situations that demand valor.
Katashi_itto
(10,175 posts)Like say during a Naval deployment. Having to go out in an away boat, in the middle of a hurricane off Cuba; to rescue some civilian yacht.
Oh wait, I did do that.

Ok how about this. The next time Air Force One gets taken over by terrorists I will help the President?
Oh Wait that was a movie. Never-mind.
Dude posting something like I would "take a bullet for the President or jump in front of a bus" is simply meaningless.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)But the only thing you can hang your hat on that I am an "armchair warrior" is your preconceived notion that I had the opportunity to act valorously and instead acted cowardly...That's really a nasty accusation but that's why you made it.
