Just don’t get hoodwinked into believing that Curt Schilling is not one of them.

Last edited Mon Mar 9, 2015, 04:08 PM - Edit history (2)

Curt’s point that there are a lot of awful people on social media was a valid one as well, except he totally ignored the fact that he is among them.

Curt Schilling has both authored and shared some of the more alarming examples of hate speech I’ve ever seen a person of his profile make, and the response has been little more than a few eye rolls and a hope that maybe if we just ignore him he’ll go away. Towards the end of 2014 Curt made three posts on his Facebook page that I feel need to be discussed before his hero tour picks up any more steam.

So why bring all this up? Because all we’re hearing about now is what a hero Curt Schilling is for standing up for his daughter and going after the trolls who said horrible things about her, but who goes after Curt when he shares a post calling black people n***ers or posts political memes of 9/11 jumpers?

Curt talks about accountability, but where was the accountability for him? I certainly didn’t write to ESPN and demand that Curt get fired for the terrible things he shared, but according to pretty much everyone, that would have been the correct way to handle it, right? Accountability is a two way street, and Curt Schilling’s social media postings have crossed that line several times.

So while you listen to masses laud him as a hero for going after the cyber-bullies who attacked his daughter, just keep in mind that most of the people he retweeted have/had just a small handful of followers. Curt Schilling has a vast audience. Tens of thousands of people were exposed to his hateful and wildly offensive postings and yet there has been no recourse. He still works for ESPN and I can guarantee you he doesn’t think he did a single thing wrong by posting any of the three examples I’ve cited.

That post shares only a couple of examples of the sort of thing Schilling has frequently posted to his blog and other high traffic outlets.

And, I personally find it odd that, in light of the topic at hand, little has been said about Schilling's failure to speak out against similar reprehensible behavior in the GamerGate situation. Horrible as they were, the comments about his daughter were not made to her, but to him in a one-time situation. While in the case of GamerGate, the threats were made directly to the women and were ongoing.

So, while it's good to see misogynistic behavior denounced, before we jump on the Curt Schilling as feminist hero bandwagon, let's not forget that Schilling, deeply involved in the gamer world, did not and has not spoken out against the disgusting violent GamerGate threats made against women. In fact, I have a very strong suspicion that as long as such threats are made against liberal or feminist women, not only will he not speak out, he won't really mind at all.

More on Schilling's own personal brand of cyber-bullying here.

I had forgotten about that one.

Dealt with him when he ran Multi-Man Publishing that revived Advanced Squad Leader and found him to be an arrogant individual who seemed to know all about the game business as he was a baseball player of some sort. I only ordered what I had to have for my customers at the time and would not stock his product due to his attitude.

I just recall my (unpleasant) dealings with him when I ran a game store many years ago. We sold a lot of SL and ASL (and pretty much everything by AH) in those days. Did really well with B-17 Queen of the Skies as well, even got mentioned in the General one time for our efforts. Hated to see them leave the market and while glad at first to see ASL picked up, I soon learned better and we just brought in enough to cover what our pre-orders covered as there was no money in it and his attitude was that of a "Legend in His Own Mind".

Let’s face it: Curt Schilling is the 21st century face of a welfare queen.

And fake small government conservatives like Mitt Romney aren’t going to criticize Schilling.

After suckering Rhode Island into a $75 million loan for his company, 38 Studios, Schilling is the poster boy for corporate welfare success stories.

38 Studios received the loan guarantee from the state of Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation as state officials lured the company from neighboring Massachusetts in an attempt to deliver hundreds of jobs and added tax revenue to the state.

What they got instead was over one hundred million dollars in unpaid bills from the conservative baseball icon.

Last week Schilling was still crying about the government not doing enough to help him. He complained that he didn’t get enough tax credits. He complained that state officials were speaking negatively of Mr. Schilling’s failure of an enterprise and that scared off investors.
http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2012/06/11/curt-schilling-is-the-21st-century-face-of-a-welfare-queen/

Also, 2011, 38 Studios moved from Massachusetts. After little more than a year in Rhode Island, with monthly expenses approaching $5 million and their big game release more than a year away, 38 Studios began to unravel with stunning swiftness. In May 2012, 38 Studios defaulted on a $1.1 million loan payment to the RIEDC, then tried to deliver a bad check. Unable to meet payroll, the company laid off its employees in a mass email, with one employee learning of his new unemployment only after his pregnant wife was told at a doctor's visit that their health insurance had been terminated.

Schilling has been an outspoken "small government Republican" activist, who campaigned with President George W. Bush in 2004, but with his business in dire straits, he once again turned to the state for a bailout.

While I'm sure he wanted to stand up for his daughter, this is also another chance for the big Schill to get himself, as the hero of course, in the media. The guy just cannot get enough attention to satisfy his humongous ego.

In November 2012, Rhode Island filed suit against Schilling and several former EDC board members alleging fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy. The lawsuit claims that Schilling and former EDC Executive Chairman Keith Stokes (who now works for the legislative lobbyist firm The Mayforth Group) knew the company would run out of money by 2012, but concealed that from the EDC before the loan guarantee was finalized

In case you missed my edit above: Hurley: Curt Schilling Not The Best Person To Be Doling Out Social Media Justice

GamerGate is important here because it's about exactly what Schilling is being lauded as some kind of superhero against--cyber-bullying.

So what is #Gamergate and how did this all start?
#Gamergate is essentially an escalating fight about the direction of gaming culture. It pits a group of feminists and their supporters—who advocate for expanding beyond the testosterone-fueled games that dominate the industry—against a vocal faction that is openly hostile toward their views. The conflict first blew up in August after a programmer named Eron Gonji wrote a revenge post about his breakup with developer Zoe Quinn, the creator of Depression Quest, a critically acclaimed game whose purpose is to illustrate the challenges of coping with depression.

The post implied Quinn had a romantic relationship with a writer for Kotaku, the gaming site run by Gawker Media, supposedly to receive favorable coverage of Depression Quest. In fact, Kotaku never reviewed the game, but nasty attacks against Quinn—including the circulation of nude photos, death threats, and rape threats—quickly flooded sites like Reddit and 4chan. Sarkeesian experienced similar threats just a few days later, after publishing a new video in her series on women and gaming. Brianna Wu, a developer behind a game with all female lead characters, has written about harassment of women in the industry; she received a series of graphic death threats last week after sharing a meme making fun of #Gamergate. She said she had to flee her home as a result.
http://www.motherjones.com/media/2014/10/gamergate-explained

I guess Schilling's superhero cape was at the dry-cleaner when GamerGate was raging.

He had a chance to speak out against the culture of misogyny that was a big part of the awful words posted about his daughter, but he failed to do so. My point is that it's giving him far more credit than he is due to imagine this is anything more than a guy with clout making sure the world knows not to mess with him or his. Other women, particularly those with whom Schilling disagrees, are fair game.

of tax money using the same legal methods for 'art', millions in 'free gov. money'. All of a sudden he (the game studio) went 'bankrupt' and dumped many employees who had just moved across the country.

public workers.

Not surprisingly, Schilling happily accepted the sweetheart deal, Rhode Island’s state government failed to monitor what the taxpayer subsidy to his company was being used for – and then Schilling’s firm promptly lost all the money, leaving Rhode Island taxpayers on the hook for $112 million in principal and interest payments. If you’re counting, that’s a rough cost of $272 for every household in the state.

The same year that this subsidy deal was crafted, Rhode Island voters elected financial industry executive Gina Raimondo (D) state treasurer. Upon taking office – and at the same time the state was so flush with cash it was handing millions over to Schilling and writing checks for its annual $356 million in corporate subsidies – Raimondo began demanding cuts to public workers’ pension benefits. As the Providence Journal reported, her plan “raised the minimum retirement age, suspended annual cost-of-living increases and replaced the state’s defined-benefit pension with a hybrid that includes a 401(k)-style plan.”
http://pando.com/2014/02/07/how-a-100000-check-exposes-the-politics-of-pension-theft/

Sadly, the D after Raimondo's name is not a typo or a FoxNoise lie.

It was an ingeniously diabolical scheme. Under the guise of “reform,” a Democratic state official had devised a way to pretend to help balance the state’s budget exclusively through cuts to worker benefits, thereby preventing serious cuts to corporate welfare programs like the ones that gave $75 million to a baseball-player-turned-tech-executive. At the same time, the new system may actually raise costs for the state and most certainly hands over more pension money to the financial industry – aka one of of Raimondo’s biggest campaign contributors. And for such an effort, Raimondo was vigorously defended by front groups like Third Way, which are funded primarily by the very financial industry that has so benefited from her “reforms.”

, same federal & state taxpayer dollars, that used to go just to 'the arts'. It was not a new law, a rider was added to the older law & added games as an art form. I remember it was about 2009 or 10? This happened about? 2 years into Shillings game development. Then he moved to that state and pink slipped everyone out of the blue. The game was dead in an instant.

America can't afford all these scammers stealing our taxpayer dollars. I think it may be to late to stop them.
