FDA debunks antibiotics in milk myth

WASHINGTON (AP) — In an encouraging development for consumers worried about antibiotics in their milk, a new Food and Drug Administration study showed little evidence of drug contamination after surveying almost 2,000 dairy farms.

In response to concerns, the agency in 2012 took samples of raw milk from the farms and tested them for 31 drugs, almost all of them antibiotics. Results released by the agency Thursday show that less than 1 percent of the total samples showed illegal drug residue.

Antibiotics and other drugs can end up in milk when they are used on dairy cows to keep them healthy. Small levels of some drugs are allowed in milk, but residues that go beyond certain thresholds are illegal.

"Overall this is very encouraging and reinforces the idea that the milk supply is safe," said the FDA's William Flynn, who led the study. He said the agency will use the findings to try and reduce the drug contamination even more.

We knew about antibiotic transfer in milk in 1959. What the hell is happening with todays FDA?

with scientists like Bill Nye, who has thoroughly investigated GMOs, and found that htey are not harmful?

He didn't "thoroughly investigate" anything. He is an actor with a bow tie and doesn't claim expertise in biotech, toxicology or ethics.

Among real experts, the science is anything but settled with half of studies finding issues and half not. And guess who did the half that do not show issues?

Peer-reviewed Meta study:

In recent years, there has been a notable concern on the safety of genetically modified (GM) foods/plants, an important and complex area of research, which demands rigorous standards. Diverse groups including consumers and environmental Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) have suggested that all GM foods/plants should be subjected to long-term animal feeding studies before approval for human consumption. In 2000 and 2006, we reviewed the information published in international scientific journals, noting that the number of references concerning human and animal toxicological/health risks studies on GM foods/plants was very limited. The main goal of the present review was to assess the current state-of-the-art regarding the potential adverse effects/safety assessment of GM plants for human consumption. The number of citations found in databases (PubMed and Scopus) has dramatically increased since 2006. However, new information on products such as potatoes, cucumber, peas or tomatoes, among others was not available. Corn/maize, rice, and soybeans were included in the present review. An equilibrium in the number research groups suggesting, on the basis of their studies, that a number of varieties of GM products (mainly maize and soybeans) are as safe and nutritious as the respective conventional non-GM plant, and those raising still serious concerns, was currently observed. Nevertheless, it should be noted that most of these studies have been conducted by biotechnology companies responsible of commercializing these GM plants. These findings suggest a notable advance in comparison with the lack of studies published in recent years in scientific journals by those companies. All this recent information is herein critically reviewed.

"equilibrium" = not settled, closer to 50/50

is a well respected scientist

and yes he did thoroughly investigate GMOs. He used to be anti-GMO, but has changed his mind on it when he investigated further

Undergrad Mechanical Engineering has nothing to do with biology. Nye worked for Boeing aircraft and developed a hydraulic pressure resonance suppressor that is still used in the Boeing 747 before his career as a television personality. Nye went to Monsanto recently and now says he is "in love" -- a phrase you don't often see at the end of thorough scientific research.

Your logical fallacy is Appeal to Authority Logical fallacies are anti-science and they prove nothing.

Meanwhile the peer-reviewed meta study I cited above shows there is no consensus among the actual experts in this field.

You will discover that certain levels of antibiotics are allowed. You have to decide if you wish to drink milk at those allowable levels.

Also, farmers can switch to antibiotics that are not tested.

I also don't wish to drink growth hormones.
