Two time Academy Award winner Emma Thompson and her husband, Greg Wise, say they will not pay their taxes until HSBC, the worlds second largest bank, pays theirs. The HSBCs Swiss banking sector was recently discovered to have helped wealthy customers get out of paying their fair share of taxes by hiding large amounts of cash in secret accounts. The bank also laundered hundreds of millions of dollars to Mexican drug cartels. Thompson and Wise are calling BS on the British government until HSBC (which is headquartered in London) executives are prosecuted for tax avoidance schemes. Speaking to the London Evening Standard:
http://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/i-wont-pay-a-penny-of-tax-until-those-evil-b-go-to-prison-greg-wise-on-politics-passion-and-parenting-10066684.html
When conservatives here in America dont want to pay taxes, its because they think they are entitled to not contribute to the nation that gave them so much. When a profound f*cking socialist doesnt want to pay taxes, its because wealthy, entitled, greedy pigs dont want to contribute. Wise went on to say that Thompson agrees with him and that the pair are prepare to go to jail if necessary:
For those of you who may not know, in 1848, populist uprisings swept across Europe which became the Revolution of 1848 or Springtime of the Peoples. With over 50 nations participating, Europe fought for freedoms in the press, workers rights, the destruction of the old feudal structure, the abolition of serfdom (economic slavery), and the dissolution of absolute monarchy. Thompson and Wise, who said, I sound like Russell f*cking Brand, dont I? are prepared to start another uprising if it means making the wealthy pay their faire share. It is because of these injustices, Wise says, there is no such thing as a democracy.

It's lovely to watch.

There's a revolution for ya! Couple it with rolling general strikes, and we just might turn the world around.

(45,984 posts)So are general strikes.
Oh, those things are against the law? So is bribing congressmen, and the fact that the bribe called a campaign contribution makes no substantive difference. Oh, but the Chief Justice said in Citizens United . . . ? That crooked shyster said what? Nothing he says should be taken seriously.

(45,984 posts)The government wants that money now.
Even if it were the case, we should expect it to change. The agenda of the oligarchs is to avoid taxes by shifting the burden on to the rest of us.
Which brings us back to why a tax strike is a good idea. Not only do the oligarch want to shift that burden to the lower classes, but they don't want the lower classes to complain. The most obvious way the people can complain is to vote for progressive, populist candidates. Therefore, obstacles to voting are put in place with fear of voter fraud given as the reason. Even if the statistics show that few charges for voter fraud are brought against anyone, the oligarchs' spokesmen will go on teevee and repeat the charge over and over again without making any attempt to disprove what the statistics strongly suggest, viz., that voter fraud is not a serious problem.
How is this not taxation without representation?
Of course, the establishment will say this is illegal and blah, blah, blah. Of course it is. Whit part of massive civil disobedience do they not understand?

(15,526 posts)See if you can't find a nice safe haven like the big boys do (RMoney, HSBC, CorpAmer, politicians). If not a safe haven, perhaps you can have your "salary/earnings" paid in Cayman/Swiss/Irish coin.
Perhaps something like income/payment in bitcoin would correct the imbalance where the rich can play the game and the rest of us have to wanna be.

(15,526 posts)You have to wonder how many bright lights like Emma Thompson and other intelligent people aren't horrified by what has happened to the equity spread - the distance between the poor and the rich. Probably most of them don't like the fact that they have to make their $millions on the backs of peasants like us, but they also don't want to offend their $billion patrons.
Kudos to Emma and many other "personalties" that are trying to get some fairness back into common people's lives.

(13 posts)Many of the uninformed think those in need of public assistance are leaches. One of the Tory's major talking points in the UK and US Republicans.
Emma Thompson is a great actress and an even greater Lady. And to be perfectly clear, if there was a vote most people in the UK would love to see the end of the Royals, who along with the Bankers are the true leaches on that society.
In the USA, UK, New Zealand socialism, not the corporate kind has proven to benefit all, it created the middle class that is now being destroyed by the fascists who have spent the last century ripping apart.
Time to turn guns into plows and false promises into butter, or something like that.

(6,453 posts)to "hostage-taking" (hostage being the money) or "terrorism" (witholding unless demands are met). If everyone did it for the right reasons, i could condone it. But i could see the idea sweeping across an already devastated population pretty quickly. Taxes pretty much enable our gov't to function. I approved of the War Tax resistors, but they mostly intentionally kept their income below Fed taxation levels. If every "disgusted with our gov't" individual decided they weren't gonna pay taxes b/c {insert individual issue with gov't here}, the shit would start to roll downhill pretty quick.
And yes, i realize there are already sovereign idiots out there and grifters and scammers and people with accountants... but what if most regular people just stopped paying?

(11,441 posts)No triangulation in that... how refreshing. We can't even get many Democrats in this country to announce they're proud to be members of the Democratic Party. Or to state that they voted for the current Democratic president, and proudly so. Oh, they can turn it on at slick conventions every four years, but the in-between years leave A LOT to be desired.

Were it not for the ideological war in progress (it's not a cultural war, no matter what the university pundits say, it's a capitalist state sponsored ideological war), they would probably form a powerful combined populist movement that would scare Washington right out of its silk shorts. Naturally, political strategists on both sides do everything possible to keep the rank and file from discovering the growing overlap of liberal and conservative thinking (or in some cases, nonthinking).
Not many working people on either side still believe that what is good for Wall Street is good for Main Street, or that very much trickles down from Wall Street to our level. No matter how much money we sweat for, or borrow -- or Congress borrows in our name without ever asking us -- and throw at Wall Street, the money sticks up there on the fortieth floor.
Then it disappears into that bizarro funhouse mirror of the real economy, the virtual economy -- euphemistically called banking and investment and the market. Our market system of "investment" is based upon getting in at the right moment, grabbing other people's money, then getting out fast. Which pretty much describes the key elements a bank heist.
