Louisville cop arrested for punching one teen, putting another in chokehold at school

Source: Raw Story

<snip>

The 31-year-old Hardin is accused of striking a teenage boy in the face with his closed fist Jan. 22 after he saw the student cut in line at the cafeteria of Olmstead Academy North.

He then cited the boy for menacing and resisting arrest, which police said Hardin had no probable cause to do.

Hardin was accused five days later of putting another teen in a chokehold until he lost consciousness and then handcuffed the boy instead of seeking medical treatment.

The officer drove the teen home and dropped him off without telling the boy’s parents what had happened.

Doctors determined this week that the boy had suffered a brain injury due to loss of blood flow during the incident, and they said the officer’s actions could have killed the teen.

We are in a full-fledged cycle of abuse. Good training is non-existent and people are learning from observing.

Lawsuit against LMPD officers claims abuse at Gentleman's Academy

<snip>

“They were rousted out of bed at 3 o'clock in the morning, made to do pushups for a couple of hours, then compelled to run laps. They weren't given water,” said attorney Thomas Clay.

In the lawsuit, a 14-year-old claims he was "hit, pushed, and slapped" and was cursed and yelled at.

Erica Buckner served as the Mental Health Program Director for the Academy.

“I apologize for all of the incidents that happened at the Gentleman's Academy, because it was not - this physical abuse, the boot camp like nature, was not a part of the intention of the program,” said Erica Buckner.

Some of these programs for troubled youth can be absolute hell holes.

"We are getting consequences for reporting abuse and it is just really hard to process that," Keen said.

The women said over the last two summers they witnessed LMPD officers working at the six week program, physically and verbally abuse enrolled children.

"They would threaten the children say, 'I'm going to cut your eyes off and throw them across the street if you roll them again,'" Keen said.

The lawsuit claims on one occasion, "scholars in each group expressed that they were wakened at 3 a.m. to engage in physical training."

"They did corporal punishment, would have everybody up and running stairs pushups until 5, 6 a.m.," said Keen.

Buckner said her pay was stopped.

"Based on what they said, because I ruined the relationship between LMPD and UofL," she said.

Buckner said steps are being taken to kick her out of her doctoral program.

Keen said she is being kicked out of a med-school lab.

"They are threatening our future for doing the right thing," Keen said.

Buckner also says the Gentleman's Academy" counted as an independent study, for which she received a failing grade.

Always the whistle blowers.
