we had "Visitors Day" every couple of years back in the '60s. Usually a Sunday. The folks/girlfriends/wives would come to the Groton, CT sub base and we would make a run out to Long Island sound and make a dive to 100 feet, surface and then return to port.

And of course we would serve up a fine meal of chili dogs and other mystery meat concoctions.

Your family probably did not get an invitation because you were on a target surface skimmer and and not a babe magnet like us submariners.
