Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHave you seen the Discussionist DU threads?
They do have a time talking about DU and a few of our members. If you find one and then click on the "du" link, you will get quite an eyeful of their discussions about their past here and about some of us.
Discussionist.com is quite unusual, I'll give them that.

And what's wrong with "Democrats" making money off the rantings of Republicans? I say it's better for them to fight with each other over there, so we don't have to fight them over here.
And what's wrong with "Democrats" making a living? Don't they have a right to feed, house and clothe their families?
It's an honest living--more honest than clunking them over the head and robbing them, certainly.

(10,274 posts)I'm not sure there is anything deeply moral about DU or discussionist. To me they are web forums like many others. As a news junkie I like DU cause it has breaking news and I agree with most people here. Over at discussionist I see stories that don't get posted here.
I read the cave for lulz, the FR sucks to me cause the interface is so lame.

(20,582 posts)I've found many very, very interesting to read. Quite often the news threads are updated just as quickly and sometimes quicker than here. (57,144 posts)I stay on a moderated forum, DU.
All speech is free speech if its made without prior censorship. What we have here is protected speech. And that takes moderators. Sometimes I think we are too quick to bump newbies who haven't gotten into how it is here. But I also know how many "first timers" are spouting off to see what they can get away with and for how long.
When I got here I was kind of offended with what I felt was an over active PC squad. Now I appreciate it. I like having divergent opinions without all the rancor and vileness that we could be having here.
If I wanted to defend my opinion with a knife fight I would not be here.
I wish there was a way for everyone here to be on MIRT for a while maybe a week.
The proof of the pudding to me is that I see a lot of megaposters here get juried for intemperate statements about other members. All in all its a functioning system that mostly works exactly the way it should.
I give the "owners" kudos for evolving without "losing the vision thing" or interest in DU.

(10,274 posts)The jury system is effective, innovative and allows the owners to focus on keeping the servers running. Spending time rehashing Internet fights in a meta forum or elsewhere is a useless effort for any administrator.
Anyone on the Internet can have an opinion even those with mental illness or lacking in education. It's wise move on the part of the admins. Wonderful.
And by the way, yeah I do. My ex-girlfriend's brother is severely epileptic and barely graduated high school. I've had political discussions with him before. A good friend of mine dropped out of high school, and now works a minimum wage job back in Portland. He's got a better awareness of what's going on in the world than the vast majority of people I know. One of my closest friends barely made it through high school and has Asbergers. Easily one of the smartest people I know, but according to you he's an idiot and a raving loon. Another friend of mine has bipolar. Yet another has depression. And another hasn't yet been diagnosed, but there's something.
"Those people" are my friends, and my community.

(10,274 posts)A "raving loon" is someone with untreated schizophrenia who hears voices, a dumb person is someone who doesn't know history or geography. At best, the jury system is like the Pirates Code in Pirates of the Caribbean, a set of guidelines. More often, it is tyranny by the majority. There are sites I belong to that are moderated. People who are not polite, who resort to name calling and bullying, who do not follow rules are warned, given time outs, and removed when they do not follow the rules.
Stupid people don't last long. Those who stay around are careful when the eviscerate those who disagree with them.
I like DU, but the jury system used here, and at Discussionist, is not moderation.

(34,648 posts)The trolls kept coming out in force whining about us not letting them post here. They kept at it and kept at it. So here comes DI, a place for us to meet in the middle. Instead it is... Not quite that. Some people don't want to pay for star membership, so as to not pay for discussionist in any way.
SMC22307
(8,090 posts)but I don't believe Skinner, et al. were "forced" into anything. And I would really like an example of the "trickery." Trolls have been a part of DU since its inception, based on the posts I see referencing mod-delivered pizza and deleted sub-threads, etc.
These "DI sucks!" threads pop up on DU with some regularity, with much speculation as to why the site was created. Have the site owners actually addressed the reason(s) why they created Discussionist? Maybe it's answered in ATA, but, meh, this is all getting a little too Meta for me. Maybe there's something to the "fawning echo chamber" remark made up-thread, and the owners were looking for more stimulating discussion. I would think DUers would welcome shooting these assholes down, but that seems not to be the case for many.
And if revenue is earned through ad clicks, the owners are making money at both sites, whether starred or not, no? I mean, if members think they're taking some strong stand by not buying a star, are they really?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)I try every so often, but I can only get called so many nigg*** or simian bit**** before I give up.
That's probably the reason for the DI sucks threads. It takes much more to out a troll and there's no mirt. And the worst stuff passes a jury with all of the craziness. I say, we should just let the cons have the place and stay away. Nobody deserves to deal with certain folks over there. Not even republicans.

(34,085 posts)I did a search, and can't find them.
My strong suspicion is that not only were those posts hidden (and are likely "name removed" by now). Anyone that blatant usually gets tagged and banned very quickly.
There is no excuse for that behavior in the first place, but just like DU has some atrocious trolls (mostly banned by MIRT without ever making their presence known t the general community), so does Discussionist.
There are definitely right wing voices there - by design. But it is unfair to tar Discussionist based on its regular and repeatedly banned trolls - just as it would be unfair to tar DU based on library girl, death threat guy, etc. who would last an equivalent length of time but for MIRT.

(34,085 posts)Discussionist is not everyone's cup of tea - but the epithets hurled at you there are no more what discussionist is about than the really vile sexually sadistic posts that death threat guy posts here are what DU is about. The difference is that you may not even be aware of that kind of posts here because MIRT cleans them up about as fast as the trolls can drop them.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)No mirt means I got to see all the weird stuff. I swear he internet searched racist phrases to try to get to me. He even indicated that that was his intention. Poor guy. I wish we could donate a life to him so he could stop being a troll.
Ms. Toad
(34,085 posts)MIRT works well here for true tolls.
Unless it was strictly limited to patrolling trolls who would be rejected on any website they posted at, I can't imagine it working there. And because there isn't a MIRT (and removal requires admin action), the troll droppings tend to get a bit higher before they are swept out.

Discussionist is at it's base, a forum for the citizenry used for discussing things that matter to our society. In practice, the Democratic Underground is the same thing but it caters to a much smaller base. (Mostly Dems here). I'd like to think that those who created Discussionist sought to create a forum that could/would be much bigger than DU-a forum that reaches a much bigger audiance.

(13,685 posts)It is interesting that in a time when free-speech is at a premium, there is a place like DI to have it all hang out.
I cringe a lot reading what some of the rwingers spew, but then I hear it on the streets as well, so it is a good thing, imo, to make them be forced to eat their spew somewhere safe. Because it certainly can be unsafe to confront them on the streets, and on DU they just get shoveled off.
