In a less quoted portion of Chris Rock's interview with Frank Rich, I think he nailed what is driving the confederate insurgency absolutely bonkers.
...my kids grew up not only with a black president but with a black secretary of State, a black joint chief of staff, a black attorney general. My children are going to be the first black children in the history of America to actually have the benefit of the doubt of just being moral, intelligent people.
President Obama has said that he's not interested in leading a national conversation on race. He's busy having a different kind of conversation that's going right over the heads of most pundits who are whining about leadership.

(3,580 posts)His parents took him to vote. He looks like the president of the United States. To him it's normal.

(83,753 posts)Lol~ Obama won there too.
I like the new normal for your grandson, gwheezie. It gives me hope for the future.
My first "vote" was a class election in 1988.
Our candidates? Dan Quayle and George Bush.
Yeah, let that one sink in.

(83,753 posts)This President is no fool, he is going after the right crowd he is reaching out to the children and young adults of all shapes and colors. The ones that have hope and love in their hearts. Yes we can.

(24,562 posts)which is so heartwarming, I love the mix of children. The first time I saw it I thought "children of the United Nations." Taking nothing away from she's OP that children of color are finally growing up with role models that actually look like them, it is also shaping the views of white children. It is natural and right to see black and brown faces in important places, something we adults could only dream about. I love the fact that the first President my granddaughters will remember is black, just like their best friends. PBO is changing the world in ways that will be seen for many generations as today's teens and children become the leaders of tomorrow. What a legacy!

(4,112 posts)The vast majority of my family, and my husband's, live there. Lots of close friends, too, including several college classmates who've recently moved back to the area after many years away. Missing the great seafood, as well! Another good motivation to return. My mother is also getting older - late 70s - and I'd like to be nearer to help out when needed. Dad passed a couple of years ago, so I was there nearly every weekend for several months as his illness progressed. I found that I really liked being back there. Just have to convince hubby it's the right thing to do!

(297,196 posts)always those who are so sad in their own lives that they can't appreciate the good that's happened because of this President.. and even go as far as making up shite about him in their own minds to qualify as victims of ODS.. but they will be on the junk pile of history.
Thanks for the OP, she.. thanks to smartypants for her ever brilliant essays.

(3,919 posts)of a person - to have people of one's own color/race in positions of power and authority.
when i went back to college and walked into a class to see an apache woman as the dr./professor - was one of my most affirming moments as an adult. when i graudated, she walked up to the front of the stage to hug me. oh my gosh. i will remember that moment, always.
thanks, she2, i'm leaving here today with a smile.

(17,656 posts)When young children look at a picture of a group of people, they look for people in that picture that are like them.
It's a fundamental basic fact of human nature.
Great thread.
