I got caught trying to shoplift. The security guard just called my parents, and told me he disliked his job when he caught "someone like me." As we sat waiting for my parents, he gave me some skittles.

Okay, the best arguments come from using real words no one knows. Try fardels, quietus, or bodkin--all from Hamlet's "To be or not to be" speech. Guaranteed to get you accused of cheating.(Quietus is worth 16 points.)

for going too fast through a school zone. I had an expired California license and an expired inspection sticker. The cop let me off with a warning.

On the other hand, in the 60's a Houston cop tried to run me off of the road while I was riding my bike.

He was drunk while driving and when the cops pulled him over the kid was smart enough to show the cop an application to a prominent college, and the cop advised him to go home and stay there until he sobered up. Yeah, the guy was white.

#criminwhilewhite is a brilliant hashtag. It's not like white people don't get arrested or in trouble, but there's a much greater chance of catching a break, that's for sure. Forget the petty stuff. Seen plenty of people get off for what should have been major drug charges because of their connections (and white skin).

Every time I speed by a cop or run a very yellow light in front of a cop, I worry that I am finally going to pay the price and get pulled over. I'm shocked it hasn't happened yet. I have 0 points on my license but I have a problem with attentiveness and therefore I'm not the best driver. I deserve a few tickets anyway.

I've got close to a dozen anecdotal stories of my own in line with these. Half of them involved me holding a loose joint in my hand while driving-- in Texas nonetheless!. Every result (except one, a citation for speeding) was the same-- "go home, get some rest and don't let me see you again."

White, male, clean-cut and well-dressed.

And the story my friends and I still chuckle about resulted in a police officer saying (direct quote) "well, since you appear more sober than I do..." (now go home, get some rest and don't let me see you again).

I find it hard to believe that you think police officers like doing more work and getting nothing in return.

Its not "planning to let them go". It is letting a disproportion number of white offenders go while using disproportionate force against minority offenders.

Was in an apartment on 116th at in the 70's before gentrification buying drugs. Police busted in saw my white face and told me to get out of there.
Walking through penn station at 0400 since I was pretty fucked up I was walking several feet behind my friend who was black. Walked past a couple of cops and they didn't say a word. My friend slowed down do I could catch up. The po-po then noticed me and stopped me and tried to claim I was prostituting
Waiting for a cab with the same friend. Cops pulled up with the same accusation that they saw me prostituting. I was never questioned by a cop for anything if I was with a white man.

I'm glad you don't have to struggle through life, and hopefully, you won't find yourself in a situation where someone mistakes you for a druggie, reckless driver, or shoplifter, and that you never drop your gun or get it stolen off you.

BTW, a couple decades ago, I was pulled over coming home off shift work around zero-dark -thirty because I was driving around 50 mph and "weaving in my lane" on the freeway even though I was within the speed limit- I was tired, still had ten more miles before I got home, and the road was wet. The officer initially thought I was drunk. Luckily, I was a 34 year old white woman in uniform at the time, so even though I was more than a bit cranky, he "gave me a break" and just told me to be a bit more aware getting home. Didn't even make me take a breathalyzer test.

Would you get the same treatment if you get pulled over like that? Do you seriously think a black driver or a Hispanic driver that had the same qualifiers as you do - including carrying that gun (which I hope is registered) - would get the same treatment if they were pulled over like that?

And I'm calling bullshit that you don't speed.

Here's the deal: The underlying context of the discussion is that cops treat black people differently than they treat white people doing the same shit. Your (stupid and undoubtedly wrong) assertion that you never engage in any minor misbehavior is beside the point, because people of color get hassled by the cops for doing absolutely nothing wrong so often that there are names for the different varieties of hassling: DWB (Driving While Black,) Stop and Frisk, etc.

And your carrying a gun points out another discrepancy: how often black people get shot because they supposedly (how do we know when the only witness is the person who shot them?) made a gesture that looked like they might be moving their hand toward a gun they didn't have, or because they were carrying a toy gun (in a state where real guns are totally legal to carry around) or a toy sword as part of a costume, or some other thing that's entirely less threatening than what you apparently do as a matter of routine?

So thanks for inadvertently making everybody's point with your ill-considered post.

We live a clean, drug and alcohol free life, don't speed (well, hubby does sometimes), don't shoplift, don't carry guns.

We always get second looks from cops when we are together. Hubby never gets a second look when he's not with me. But, he didn't inherit too much melanin.
