WTF is wrong with these cowardly cops now days? They want the great pay and benefits for a dangerous job but do not actually want ANY RISK anymore. Shoot first and then get a paid vacation and no criminal charges.
Why were these two idiots walking around the building with their guns un-holstered when they were there just on a routine building check??
Until we start locking up these assholes there is no downside for the cops to do this shit anytime.
From another link is this:
Gurleys girlfriend, 26-year-old Melissa Butler, told DNAinfo, They didnt present themselves or nothing and shot him. As soon as he came in, the police opened the [door to the] eighth floor staircase. They didnt identify themselves at all. They just shot.

"No dialogue was exchanged" before Officer Peter Liang shot Akai Gurley in the stairwell, where the men crossed paths, Bratton said.
Gurley, a 28-year-old father of a 2-year-old, was unarmed.
........
"The deceased is totally innocent," Bratton said at a news conference yesterday. "This is a very unfortunate tragedy. It appears that this was an accidental discharge."
After the 11:15 p.m. shooting, Liang and his partner left the scene but returned a short time later. Gurley, who police said was hit once in the chest, died at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center at 11:55 p.m. The officers went to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center for tinnitus, ringing in the ears.
Bratton said Liang had drawn his weapon before encountering Gurley and "will have to give justification why his gun was unholstered."

(14,733 posts)He pulled the trigger. While pointing the gun directly at another human being.
That's not an accident. It's criminal negligence at the very least, more likely involuntary manslaughter. And it should mean he never holds a gun again.
"will have to give justification why his gun was unholstered" is total BS. He should be going to trial.

(9,951 posts)WTF was his gun in his hand, finger on the trigger when all they were doing was a routine check?
And why would he point his gun at someone who is no threat, not presenting any threat?
That's why my bullshit meter is pegged.

(34,648 posts)Improper training is what I think is wrong with Law Enforcement in this shooting. People need to learn how to use weapons properly and keep them under control.

(14,863 posts)and to keep them under control. He and his partner simply chose to do otherwise. They were probably getting a real charge out of creeping around with their guns drawn, fantasizing about shooting a Bad Guy, and then the victim surprised them. Oops.

(36,437 posts)That tends to happen whn you take the safety off and pull the trigger.

(24 posts)NYPD carry Glock 19's. There's no safety. It's likely he had his gun out with his finger on the trigger, when he encountered the victim he got scared and jerked the trigger and fired. Glocks don't fire accidently. They have been dropped from 2 stories and haven't fired. Still doing a vertical patrol in any NYC housing project is scary and dangerous. It's true that often times lights have been smashed and elevators don't work people have to use the stairs, but it's also well known the criminals often victimize people in the stairwells. I once came across a man raping a teenager in a housing project in the Bronx. I hesitated because I though it might consensual in which I would have just told them to leave, but after a second, the girl started to squirm and scream. The man jumped up and ran down the stairs and I gave chase and transmitted a description. He was caught when a marked car ran him over.
I'm certain this cop will be fired. He is a rookie and probably on probation. You can get fired for any infraction when on probation.
I doubt there will be a criminal prosecution though. There's no criminal intent. The shooting is "accidental" because it will be hard to prove he intended to fire the gun, I'm certain he was scared an jerked the trigger.
The family's course of redress will be a civil suit which they should receive millions.

(22,457 posts)you are a cop with that silly answer.
DUI murder is not criminal intent. Text while driving murder is not either. But people go to jail all the time for that.
Fruitville Station was not criminal intent? Jail time.
You don't seem to know much for being a cop.

(9,951 posts)the safety is on the trigger, but what pegs my bullshit meter is that NYPD issued Glocks have a 12 lb trigger pull, which means you have to apply considerable pressure compared to other depts. that carry Glocks, so how is this an accidental shooting?
