"He ate the turkey on the counter"

That phrase brings to mind (for most people) this:

BUT..

supposedly this was a summertime trip.

How many people do you know who have a roast turkey in summertime?

I know the "beat a dead horse" people will show up immediately...and the ones who swear that roast turkey fresh from the oven is a perfect summertime treat.

Every time they talk about "the dog incident" they try to tidy it up....and it only adds more questions.

edited to add:

If she later says it was COLD turkey, THIS Mom wonders about salmonella, and how any Mom would leave coldcuts on the counter

People making sandwiches at a counter would notice a huge Irish Setter preparing to gobble all the turkey up.. Sandwich meat left unattended is never a good idea.. Any good Mom knows that

Tasha & her daughter , 85 & 90 pound Labs , respectively, ate the WHOLE box..cardboard carton & all.. We found a few shreds of cardboard, but that was it. I called the vet immediately & he said that Labs (and many large breeds have a way of handling "foraging", and they would be fine.. and they were.. Of course they were not very hungry for a while

I don't get what she's saying. Is she saying something was wrong with the turkey such as it was tainted meat? Otherwise, I don't understand why a turkey on the counter could cause a dog to have the runs. I once had a dog that got sick on a trip but that's because I fed it some milk and ice cream from the frig rather than throw it away (we were going away for awhile). The dog didn't have the runs but bad gas and farted non-stop for a couple of days in the car.

Story when the dogs ate the Christmas turkey. The Romney chefs would not have left a turkey (if they made one) on a counter unattended.

It makes it worse that she now blames the poor dog. Makes up a story about the dog stealing food. Probably never left the poor thing in the mansion anyhow.

Thanksgiving has its own caveats. Don’t let your dog lick the turkey-roasting pan – "that’s the surefire way to give a dog a pancreatitis attack," Weiskopf says. "You can pour a tablespoon of drippings over your dog’s food, but do not let him lick the pan clean." Carved turkey meat and small bits of skin are fine dog treats; cooked turkey bones are not. If you’re not planning to use the turkey neck for another culinary purpose, such as gravy, offer it raw to your dog as a special holiday treat – but first, dip it in boiling water for 10 seconds to kill surface bacteria.

It's one of those things that you can stretch over quite a few meals and still have enough left to freeze some.

It's easy to imagine that in these times I am not the only one who does this

I've been at summer parties where the hosts served turkey because it's simple to cook and feeds a crowd. I don't have dogs, but I've had cats that were adept at stealing bits of poultry.

However, they still put the dog on the roof rather than spending a few bucks to, say, rent a vehicle large enough to fit everyone, including the dog, or take another of their cars, or hire a pet sitter, or do anything that a normal person would do.

a guy I heard on the radio even went so far as to say that he thought the whole drive-to-canada story was made up, and the dog bit thrown in for "color"..then the boys went a little far with the story..

Weren't these the Bain-years?

It's about Shepherd's neighbor the Bumpus' who had hound dogs which one Christmas Eve invaded Shepherd's house just as his father was about to carve into the turkey and carried it off.

Love Jean Shepherd.

Ann, you can't begin to tell a tale as well as the original recanteur. Furthermore, we all know where you got the story. You're busted!

as political theatre can have an effect. Look at the folks today in NYC in "tax Dodger uniforms protesting the Ann Romney luncheon and the tax evading corporations. I plan to get a large stuffed toy dog, toss him in a dog carrier, label it Seamus, and strap him to the roof of my car. In the fall the movement could hard to ignore. Way better than a bumper sticker! Repubs will just look and go huh???

I did it once. Same turkey the family ate. There was nothing wrong with it. I was cleaning up the runs around the house for a day and a half. They have never had turkey again. The dogs are very different breeds, but both reacted poorly.

She might have a point on the turkey thing.
