http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/09/04/nyc-cops-arrest-human-rights-lawyer-waiting-outside-restaurant-while-her-kids-used-restroom/A human rights lawyer was arrested outside a Ruby Tuesdays in New York City as she waited for her children, who were inside using the restroom, The New York Daily News reports.
On Tuesday, Chaumtoli Huq filed a lawsuit in Manhattan Federal Court alleging that the New York Police Department officers who arrested her used unreasonable and wholly unprovoked force as she was waiting for family after a pro-Palestinian rally in July.
Huq had, the previous day, taken a leave of absence from her role as a top attorney with New York Citys Public Advocates office so she could focus on the abuse of garment workers in her home country of Bangladesh.
According to the lawsuit, police approached Huq outside of the Ruby Tuesdays and instructed her to move along. She explained to the officers that her husband was escorting their children to the bathroom inside, and that she was waiting for them to return. At that point, without any legal basis, [one officer] grabbed Ms. Huq, turned her and pushed her against the wall and placed her under arrest.

(67,108 posts)congress, the Justice Dept., whomever, needs to step in. This, is getting woefully out of control.
But it'll have to involve the close relative of a Republican asshat...either a member of Congress or the Vatican 5 who sit on SCOTUS!
And yes it'll have to be fatal...

(24,979 posts)Unless this turns into something unprecedented, it will make no difference whatsoever, and insofar as they are "persecuted" by this liberal overseer, other cops will show solidarity. In a couple of years they may end up on an inside track to promotion.
As you should know, they could have shot her 42 times on video and still have a 50-50 shot of a complete acquittal - and I say 50-50 only because she's a human rights lawyer with the city government they ostensibly work for.
Police have near-total impunity to harrass and assault people on the street.

I hope she wins her lawsuit. I hope it stings enough to get those brutal bigots off the force. I hope it stings enough to get police some real human to human training instead of just gun range practice.
Funny, the more ignorant and brutal the cops get, the safer the stereotypical suburban/wealthy urban conservative feels. It's just one more symptom of an entire country gone haywire since 1980.

(6,241 posts)themselves be held personally financially liar for stupid crap they pull like this. Maybe after a few of them end up fired and living under a bridge, the rest will be too worried about their lives being ruined hassling innocent people like this. They'll actually go after actual criminals.

If she had been any darker, they might have arrested her kids, too. Maybe brown kids should not use the potty that the rest of us use!

My favorite line from 'They Live': "I have come to chew bubble gum and kick ass; and I'm all out of bubble gum." Not sure if the line originated in that movie, but damn that was cute.

(10,597 posts)OK... if there has NOT been a book written to document police brutality in this country, who is going to do it? Would be a great job for a group of paralegals and/or lawyers. Has DeBlassio done anything about the police brutality in NYC since he took office? I hope that Justice Dept probe of the Ferguson, MO Police Dept is just the start of a top-down review of all police depts in this country. This is what happens when our government is too preoccupied with pleasing The Corporation, instead of doing We The People's business. It's what happens when a blind eye is turned to ANY corruption in ANY part of our government.
This is a lawless fucking nation. Land of laws, my ass!
