No Charges Filed Against Distracted Deputy in Cyclist’s Death

No charges will be filed against a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was using a mobile digital computer just before his patrol car fatally struck a prominent entertainment attorney as he was bicycling in Calabasas last year, the District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

A charge evaluation worksheet stated there was “insufficient evidence” to charge Deputy Andrew Wood with vehicular manslaughter in the Dec. 8, 2013, death of 65-year-old Milton Everett Olin Jr., a former chief operating officer for Napster.

“Wood briefly took his eyes away from the road precisely when the narrow roadway curved slightly to the left without prior warning, causing him to inadvertently travel straight into the bike lane, immediately striking” Olin, who was riding eastbound in the bicycle lane on Mulholland Highway shortly after 1 p.m., according to the documen
