For 17 years, Modestos Public Works Department has used mounted cameras to monitor the flow of traffic and make adjustments to signal timing. For the first time, the Modesto Police Department has the capability to tap into those cameras to help solve crimes and investigate accidents.
The City Council last month approved the purchase of equipment that will record the feeds of the citys 37 traffic cameras and give access through an Internet-based system for viewing. Chief Galen Carroll said the Police Department has the equipment and expects it will be up and running in 30 to 60 days.
