Who could have predicted that letting people shoot other people because they feel "threatened" for any reason would lead to violence?

You have to have good reason to use deadly force.

Use of Deadly Force for Lawful Self-Defense

***snip***

Q. When can I use my handgun to protect myself?

A. Florida law justifies use of deadly force when you are:

Trying to protect yourself or another person from death or serious bodily harm;
Trying to prevent a forcible felony, such as rape, robbery, burglary or kidnapping.

Using or displaying a handgun in any other circumstances could result in your conviction for crimes such as improper exhibition of a firearm, manslaughter, or worse.

***snip***

Q. What if someone uses threatening language to me so that I am afraid for my life or safety?

A. Verbal threats are not enough to justify the use of deadly force. There must be an overt act by the person which indicates that he immediately intends to carry out the threat. The person threatened must reasonably believe that he will be killed or suffer serious bodily harm if he does not immediately take the life of his adversary. emphasis added

I didn't see anything about Skittles on that list, yet there is outrage because a person who stalked someone and then shot him dead is still walking around free...

I do blame the local authorities for hiding behind the law and not arresting Zimmerman.

Obviously the wording of the law needs to be changed in order to remove any ambiguities or confusion.

Of course the investigation is not complete and therefore very few people have any real knowledge of what happen that night. Still if the media would not have focused on this story, Zimmerman would never have any chance of facing a jury.
