I know that the House votes for Impeachment, then the Senate would carry out the trial to convict.
But hypothetically, if teabaggers controlled both the House and Senate, would it be possible for them to conduct a kangaroo court session to remove the President?
I ask this because they sure seem to be whipping themselves up into a frenzy over impeachment, despite there not being one single shred of evidence of any crimes committed. But with the teabagger crowd, who needs evidence?
Of course, such a move would set a horrible precedent, but I'm not quite sure they would even consider the ramifications.
Or are there any checks in place to prevent such a gross abuse?

(2,004 posts)The stolen elections of 2000 and 2004 should prove that these people will do anything to gain and hold power. They care nothing for the Constitution and for the rule of law or the consequences of their actions. These people believe they are untouchable and so all the bad consequences will fall only on people they care nothing about.

(17,064 posts)And there aren't enough Dem-controlled seats up for re-election for the GOP to hold 67 seats. So, in short, the answer is no... unless several Dems joined in with the republicans (which isn't going to happen).

(5,614 posts)I guess it is conceivable that enough GOPuke reps could return a bill of impeachment with no more "evidence" than Issa could provide AND enough Senate seats could change hands to make a vote against Obama possible. Could happen.
And then Joe Biden would be President. Sort of like what would have happened if we'd managed to impeach Bush, giving us Satan in the Oval Office.
Of course, impeaching Obama might well lead to another Civil War after which the Tea Party would be an unfortunate footnote in US history.

(25,183 posts)And that's the experience they had when they tried it fifteen years ago. They overreached, and it didn't gain them anything.
I think it's bluster to get opposition from our side to their plans, that they can then use in 2014 and 2016.

(10,500 posts)they feel comfortable simply expelling all Democratic members of congress, if they (Republicans) are in the majority. If they did that then they could have the 2/3 votes needed to remove a Democratic president. As well as the vice-president. Thereby putting a Republican speaker in the White House.
The wouldn't do this today. But 20 years from now? Who knows. For that matter, you know those frightening militia groups out there? They look for recruits at GOP campaign rallies. Would a Republican congress and Republican president ever fund them? Declare them to be patriot groups, in line with the vision of the Constitution's framers, and award them federal grants for their "service?" Would they give them enough money to enable them to buy a van or bus and travel to swing states and districts to serve "poll watchers" on Election Day?
Some of these fears may be far out there. But again....what about in 20 years? With each passing year they grow more and more extreme. And they further deepen their ability to justify the unjustifiable.
