(CNN) -- The Justice Department is preparing to sue Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, known internationally as "America's toughest sheriff," saying talks between the two sides have fallen through.
...
The two sides were scheduled to meet Wednesday, but Arpaio called off the meeting at the last minute, the Justice Department said.

(Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez) noted the investigation had uncovered startling levels of racial profiling against Latino drivers, ranging between four and nine times higher than against non-Latino motorists.
Perez added that an independent reviewer involved in the probe described it as "the most egregious racial profiling in the United States" he had ever seen.

(23,973 posts)If he is "America's Toughest Sheriff", why is violent crime going down in EVERY Arizona jurisdiction...except his?
Maybe it's because he and his crew of racists spend all their time profiling Latinos, instead of going after actual criminals?

(16,110 posts)Which would you rather do? Go after violent criminals who might shoot back and even resist, or some illegal alien cleaning offices at night?

(51,349 posts)that identifies Maricopa law enforcement as chicken shits because they don't want to go after real criminals that might shoot back? Someone should put together a slick video making the Maricopa law enforcement a laughing stock so that they are considered the Keystone cops of the USA.

And what criminals are you talking about?
Guys with guns?
You crazy or something??
According to Joe, everything is just peachy keen in his jurisdiction, no violent crime, except them damn sneaky Messicans trying to earn a living.

(10,164 posts)My folks live in Maricopa County and Mom's view on Arpaio is that "if he weren't attention whoring for the media all the time, maybe he'd catch a few more crooks." Dad's is less printable.

(51,349 posts)And make sure the other counties see it too. But more importantly keep reminding those in Maricopa County that crime is much higher and it is because of the idiot geezer that has no business being sheriff. Most likely the high crime is an indication of corruption within the department. IMO

(13,305 posts)If the DOJ suspects or has evidence of someone breaking or violating laws, why the hell would they be negotiating with him? If something is in their power to monitor or investigate then do it. Why do they need his permission? Why are they delicately dancing around this clown?

(82,849 posts)I see Sheriff Arpaio as Otto in "A Fish Called Wanda," who hears someone behind him cock a gun and yell "Freeze!" He turns around apprehensively to see it's Archie. He relaxes and says, "Oh, it's you. I was worried for a moment there." Sheriff Arpaio knows that this particular incarnation of the Department of Justice is far more adept at rousting medical marijuana dispensaries than prosecuting actual crime. He knows the war criminals from the previous administration are still walking around free, writing books and collecting honoraria on the lecture circuit. As for the captains of industry who drove the country's economy off a cliff during the 2000s, they all have jobs in the current administration. Arpaio could be forgiven for thinking this is the prelude to becoming head of the FBI.

(13,305 posts)They are more worried about what right wing pundits are going to say and what kind of outrage they'll gin up than they are worried about doing what is right and definitely way more worried about it than they are worried about any liberals or progressives being mad at them.. Amazingly, it hasn't sunk in to any of their stubborn, thick skulss that these same people will find outrage anywhere at any time whether it's justified or not.

(2,145 posts)because I agree with both of you. The DOJ is supposed to be doing their job enforcing the law. But I guess they are so busy prosecuting marijuana dispensaries and their sick patients that they do not have the time or energy to spare for really egregious violations of law like Arpaio's or Zimmerman's. They are so busy ignoring the police over-reach all over the country in their dealing with protesters that they can't prosecute the fraud of the bansters and their minions on wall st....and so it goes....
