VIDEO: Meghan McCain Unleashes On Callista Gingrich For Being 'A Mistress'

In a somewhat awkward attack, Meghan McCain argued on MSNBC Tuesday that Callista Gingrich is doing damage to her husband's presidential primary campaign because she is "a mistress," has an "icy" personality and has caused controversy in Gingrich's campaign.

"As much as you don't like talking about Calllista Gingrich," McCain told the panel of guests on "Now with Alex Wagner," "I think the fact that she was a third wife and a mistress and is coming off somewhat icy and [her] reputation of being somewhat controversial within their campaign is doing damage. Maybe just to politicos, but I think it's something that people, and especially values voters, will bring into the race."

But those criticisms could equally be applied to McCain's mother, Cindy McCain, who was subjected to intense media scrutiny during Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign.

Cindy McCain began dating Sen. McCain in 1979, nearly a year before he filed for divorce from his first wife, Carol McCain. During the campaign, her fortune, which comes from a family beer distributorship, and her spending habits caused controversy, notably when her husband paused before remembering how many houses he and his wife owned. And her personal style was often described as cold and glazed over during the campaign.

But the remarks come as little surprise for those who've followed Meghan McCain since she first stepped onto the political stage in 2008. She has never been known to shy away from political controversies, and she has disagreed with her father on issues, most notably with her support of same-sex marriage and the repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy

2. Geez, Meghan...you might want to look at your own parents' history before you spout off like that.

Your dad's first wife waited for him when he was a POW and got dumped when he didn't like how she looked anymore after she was disfigured by a car wreck.

7. John McCain's daughter is absolutely right on the money, here.

It's not her fault that her father was a gold digger and cozied up to young Cindy and her family money, so Cindy's dad could finance his run for Congress after he realized he wasn't going to make Flag like his dad and grampa.

For a POW, with that pedigree, not making Flag was a near impossibility, but John McCain ticked off way too many people when he was working at OLA. He also had a bad reputation amongst his peers and subordinates. However, that tour was not a waste--he got to understand how Congress worked in a very intimate way.

Meghan wasn't even born when all that happened--she's the baby of the family.

I don't think Meghan's a bad person--she speaks her mind, and she's articulate. She's more liberal than many Blue Dogs. She's also right about how Calista is perceived; I mean, after all, if Newt got elected, she'd be the first First Lady with a very public and verifiable (not Hollywood rumor like Nancy Reagan) status as a (insert crude name for person who performs oral sex act here) -- she'd be the butt of far too many jokes. It would dog her worse than the jokes about "Laura Bush killed a guy." It would be constant fodder...and it will ramp up quick in the unlikely event that he's the nominee. It's just a target rich circumstance, between her "seeing to" the former Speaker in his office, all those Tiffany bills, her converting Newtie to Catholicism...way too much "stuff" there.

10. Well, I wasn't characterizing one as "worse" than the other....

It's just that one story is more appealing, for salacious reasons, of course, than the other.

There are many more crude jokes waiting to be made about Calista than there ever were about Laura Bush killing her boyfriend with her car. Calista and Newt, while he was 'Da Speeekah' were "walked in on" by many on his staff, and there are plenty of stories floating around about what they were doing, where, and when.

Old Laura only killed her boyfriend once--she wasn't running someone over every night and twice on Saturday. Calista, on the other hand, was very busy, very often, and she wasn't terribly discreet.

I rather like her -- or, at least, among all the Republicans I know in the public eye, she's among those few I don't actually utterly despise.

That Callista freaks me out. But so does Newt. I can't imagine him turning Catholic because of her -- just not something that computes for me, and what I've known about him all these years.
