"These are serious allegations and any allegations of criminal activity should be referred to the Australian Federal Police for investigation," a spokesperson for Senator Conroy said.

Separately, Treasurer Wayne Swan told a conference in Melbourne that the allegations of News piracy were "concerning".

The puzzle is exactly which Australian laws have been broken - at present it would appear none.

With regard to "the allegations" - this actually happened back in 2002. Here's the BBC link from almost exactly 10 years ago :

The Great Smartcard Piracy Row - with its lurid allegations and counter-allegations of industrial espionage, dirty tricks and sharp practice - is already threatening to do enormous damage to the two protagonists.

Canal Plus Technologies makes smartcards for more than 12.5 million digital set-top boxes around the world, including ITV Digital's.

NDS makes smartcards for 27.3 million boxes worldwide, including Sky Digital's.

NDS had reverse engineered Canal Plus's cards. Canal Plus took NDS to court, droped the case and then paid NDS substantial damages.

News Corp had already sold the majority shareholding in NDS to venture capitalists. NDS was sold to Cisco the week before last.
