WND, others, swipe picture of wrong man from Fort Hood newspaper’s archives

After the Fort Hood shooting on Wednesday, as they updated readers on the latest through Facebook, the Killeen (Texas) Daily Herald posted this message early Thursday morning:
A Herald photo from 2010 of a soldier with the same name as the suspected Fort Hood shooter was confirmed by III Corps officials early Thursday as unrelated to Wednesday's shooting. The man in the photo is still alive and not involved in the attack. The Herald temporarily removed the photo from its website to prevent its circulation with other media outlets' reports of Wednesday's shooting.

The Daily Herald’s metro editor, Kristi Parker Johnson, clarified the point further after a few angry comments.

The paper had written a feature story about Ivan Lopez (who was not the shooter but shared the same name) in 2010, Parker Johnson said. ... Parker Johnson left the newsroom around midnight and at 12:45 a.m. Thursday morning, got confirmation that it wasn’t the same man. By that time, though, they discovered other media outlets had gone looking through the Daily Herald’s archives, too, and pulled the picture. Those sites include WND (which still has the wrong photo up.) The photo also made its way around social media and onto blogs including Pamela Geller’s Atlas Shrugs.
