SAN ANTONIO Presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Thursday said Republicans should give President Barack Obama another term if Santorum isnt the GOP nominee and for a second day compared rival Mitt Romney to an Etch A Sketch toy.
Santorum reiterated an argument he has made before: Romney is not conservative enough to offer voters a clear choice in the fall election and that only he can provide that contrast.
You win by giving people a choice, Santorum said during a campaign stop in Texas. You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone whos just going to be a little different than the person in there.
Santorum added: If theyre going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk of what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate for the future.

(1,644 posts)I have been maintaining for a while now that the main reason Santorum and Gingrich have stayed in the race this long is that they were competing for the V.P. slot on the Republican ticket. It is obvious that the fix has been in for Romney from the beginning. Part of my reasoning was that, while the R candidates have been campaigning against each other strongly, they weren't saying anything(especially about Romney) that they couldn't take back later. Now, Santorum has stepped over the line. If he thinks Romney will choose him for his running mate now, he is delusional.

(1,644 posts)We are fooling ourselves if we put too much stock into our wishful thinking that a brokered Republican convention will break up their party and hand the election to President Obama. Fighting is what primaries are for. Remember, in 2008, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were savaging each other, politically. It did not destroy the Democratic party.
So, do not count on the R's destroying each other. We still have to work for it.

(22,308 posts)The main difference is that we had two excellent candidates while the (R)s have four terrible ones.
Also the attacks in 2008 were nothing like what they are calling each other this time around. Newt called Rmoney a liar in no uncertain terms. Santorum today said that a second term for Pres. Obama would be better than Etch-A-Sketch Romney.
I don't remember anything like that in 2008.
I don't think that a floor fight will hand the election to us but I do think it makes the general election somewhat easier. Some percentage of them are bound to feel as if their candidate was robbed and that should depress turnout.

(1,644 posts)However, I think Santorum is smart enough to realize that his best, long-term bet is to be the loyal party guy and support the nominee once he is chosen. Most primary losers do not get petulant enough to play spoiler.
Mrs. Clinton could have gummed up the works for Barack Obama during the general election, if she wanted. But, if she had done that, and caused McCain to win, she would now be 'persona-non-grata' within her party.
Ron Paul, on the other hand, is highly unpredictable. His followers might just decide that, "If it is not my guy, I won't vote." Who knows?
